The SXU Women’s Volleyball team managed to turn their early season woes around this week when they won two out of three of their games.
The Cougars kicked off the week on September 10th, when they played the Judson Eagles in Elgin, Illinois. The Cougars entered the game with a 1-5 record, while Judson entered with a 6-4 record.
The first set was a very close affair, with the Cougars eventually pulling out a close 27-23 win. The second set was a back and forth struggle to begin with, as both teams were tied for most of it. However, near the end, the Eagles pulled away and eventually won the set 24-18. The third set was another close one, with both teams tied at 19 going into the final stretch.
However, SXU pulled away and eventually won the set 25-19. The fourth and final set was more of the same SXU dominance that they showed at the end of the third set, as the Cougars won the set 25-19, winning the game in the process. The Cougars improved to 2-5 with the win, while Judson fell to 6-5 with the loss.
Saint Xavier then traveled to Palos Heights, Illinois to play the Trinity Christian Trolls, the Trolls entered the game with a 4-5 record. The first set was completely dominated by the Trolls,who lead by as much as 12-4 at one point. The final tally was even worse for the Cougars, as they lost the first set by 12 points, 25-13.
The second set was surprisingly close, with both teams tied 16-16 at one point. However the Trolls went on a 9-4 run to close out the set and eventually won it 25-20. The third and final set was very close, but Trinity Christian always held a small lead. Despite SXU’s best efforts, the Trolls closed things out and won the third set, along with the game, 25-23. The Cougars fell to 2-6 with the loss, while the Trolls improved to 5-5 with the victory.
The Cougars closed out the week by coming home to the Shannon Center to play the Robert Morris Eagles. Robert Morris entered the game with a 0-12 record. The first set started off with a close back and forth affair, but near the end, some costly service errors from the Eagles gave the Cougars the momentum to win the set 25-20. The second set started off close, but the Cougars eventually went on a 14-5 run to win the set 25-14.
The third and final set started off with the Eagles actually taking a small 10-6 lead, but that soon evaporated. The Cougars fought back and went on a 14-6 run to take a 20-16 lead. From there, it was easy pickings for the Cougars, who eventually won the set 25-21. Saint Xavier improved to 3-6 with the win, while Robert Morris fell to 0-13 with the loss.
Saint Xavier plays once next week, against Indiana University-Kokomo in Kokomo, Indiana.
