SXU Women’s Soccer Remains Winless

This week, the SXU Women’s Soccer team continued their poor start to the season when they played Aquinas College and Cornerstone University.

The Cougars kicked off their week on September 13th, when they traveled to Grand Rapids, Michigan to play the Aquinas Saints. Saint Xavier entered the game with an 0-2-1 record, while Aquinas entered with a 3-1-1 record. The game kicked off with some dominant Aquinas play, but at the 13th minute, the Saints committed a penalty, which gave SXU a penalty kick. The Cougars took advantage of it when midfielder Shelby Bishop buried the shot in the back of the net to give Saint Xavier a 1-0 lead.

However, the Saints almost immediately struck back when forward Hannah Crum got the ball past SXU goalkeeper Ashley Smialek to tie the game up 1-1. Neither team got any real opportunities for the rest of the half and the game went to halftime with both teams tied at one.

In the second half, Aquinas forward Danni McKenzie buried a penalty kick to put the Saints up 2-1. Less than half a minute later, midfielder Madison Mohr nailed a header into the back of the net up to put Aquinas up 3-1. Barely ten minutes had passed when the Saints scored another goal, thanks to forward Filippa Struxsjo burying a rebound into the back of the next. The Cougars got a few more chances, but couldn’t connect on any of them.

After two more goals, the final whistle blew and the game ended with the Aquinas Saints beating the Saint Xavier Cougars 6-1. Aquinas improved to 4-1-1 with the win, while SXU fell to 0-3-1 with the loss.

The next day, the Cougars stayed in Grand Rapids to play the Cornerstone Golden Eagles. The Golden Eagles entered the game with a 4-0-0 record. Cornerstone got on the board almost immediately when midfielder Kylie Adams scored on a fast break to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.

A little under a minute later, Cornerstone forward Erica Mick crossed the ball to midfielder Jozlyn Vantol, who buried the ball in the net to put the Golden Eagles up 2-0. The SXU defense managed to slow the Cornerstone defense for a little while before the offense showed back up when defensive midfielder Brooke Dobbin scored her first goal of the year and put the Golden Eagles up 3-0. Neither team had any real scoring opportunities for the rest of the half.

The second half started with Jozlyn Vantol scoring her second goal of the day, which put the Golden Eagles up 4-0. The SXU offense continued to struggle and did not get a decent scoring opportunity for the rest of the game. The final whistle blew with the Cornerstone Golden Eagles beating the Saint Xavier Cougars 4-0. Cornerstone improved to 5-0-0 with the victory, while SXU fell to 0-4-1 with the loss.

The Cougars play once next week, an away game against Trinity Christian College on September 21st.
