The Saint Xavier Women’s Basketball Team had an eventful week. The Cougars went undefeated over the course of the week with a 2-0 record. What makes it even more remarkable is that the Cougars won the two games by a combined score of 76 points.
The week started with a game on Wednesday, November 11th against the Trinity Christian Trolls in Palos Heights. The Cougars had an 11-0 run early in the game and this would set the tone for The Cougars who would end the quarter with a score of 31-14.
The Cougars would play even better in the 2nd quarter where they showed the ability to lock down an opponent only allowing five points for the entire quarter. The Cougars would go into halftime up 46-19 and they wouldn’t relinquish this lead for the rest of the game.
The blowout would continue for the rest of the game and SXU would win by a score of 96-46. The dominance could be shown in more than just the final score. The Cougars ended the game shooting 49% from the field as opposed to 25% for Trinity and 52% from the 3 point line vs 23%.
The key players for the Cougars were Maddie Welter, who led the team in scoring with 19 points and Claire Austin who added 15 points off the bench and had three blocks.
The Cougars would return home for their next game on Saturday against the Calumet St.Joseph Crimson Wave.
Saint Xavier showed what they were going to do from the start of the game when they opened up with a 19-0 run. This would propel them to a 30-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. SXU would continue dominating the game into the second quarter where they outscored The Crimson Wave by a score of 22-13. The next half would just be more of the same and SXU came out of the game with a comfortable 61-97 win.
The Cougars were exceptional in this game on the defensive end. They forced The Crimson Wave to turn the ball over 23 times and limited them to shooting just 32% from the field. Where The Cougars played best on defense was the perimeter where they limited Calumet College to just three made three pointers throughout the game.
If the saying defense wins championships have any merit then Saint Xavier just might be on their way to one.
The key player for the Cougars in this one was Chanel Fanter who had a team high 20 points, pulled down 6 rebounds and even contributed on the defensive end with four blocks. The other most important player for SXU was Claire Austin yet again. She had another great game off the bench scoring 17 points and pulling down six boards.
Saint Xavier’s Record now stands at 5-1 for the season and 3-0 in conference play. They will look to continue this success next week where they play on the road against non-conference opponent Indiana Wesleyan and later return home to play the 25th ranked Indiana Northwest Redhawks in conference.
