SXU Win Over Judson; Drop game against Governors State

Saint Xavier University vs. Judson 90-77 (W)

On Jan. 22, Saint Xavier University’s (SXU)’s men’s basketball team came out victorious 90-77 against Judson at the Bob Hallberg Court in the Shannon Center. 

Six different players from the Cougars roster scored 10 or more points to secure the victory. Junior forward Davion Larence led the way with 16 points, three rebounds and a steal. 

Senior guard, Sando Hill, had an all round game on his side. He finished the night with 15 points, a program record eight steals, and added six rebounds with five assists while playing 24 minutes off the bench. 

SXU had 16 steals, tying their second-highest total this season. They continued to be outstanding on the defensive end as they forced 29 turnovers, tying their season high . SXU as a whole dished out 20 assists, this is their fifth game with 20 or more assists this 2025 season. 

Junior guard, Mekhi Wilson, concluded the game with 15 points, shooting 5-11 from behind the three point line. Fifth-year guard, Julian Barr, posted 14 points with two assists, two rebounds and a pair of steals.  

Redshirt sophomore guard, Mason Kibelkis, had 12 points which came from the four three pointers that he made. Senior forward, Kevin Bishop, had a final statline of six points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals. 

The Cougars shot 31-70 (44.3%) and 17-41 (41.5%) from behind the arc. One of the aspects of the game that SXU capitalized off was getting 40 point off turnovers and they also had 43 bench points which played a big part. 

SXU started taking control in the second half after they led by 12 at the 12:53 mark and then earned their highest lead at 18 with around four minutes left in the fourth quarter. 

Overall the Cougars played a good game on both ends on the floor to collect another win. 

Saint Xavier University vs. Governors State 95-108 (L)

Continuing on to the weekend events, The Cougars could not find the win and were defeated 95-108 at Governors State University on Sat. Jan. 25. 

SXU had 6 players that scored 10 points or more, but it was not enough to secure a win. 

Governor’s state started the game hot, coming out the gate on a 12-2 run to set the tone of the game. 

With 13 minutes left in the first half,  Wilson connected on a three pointer to take their first 16-15 lead. At halftime, GSU found themselves up 48-51. 

In the second half, both teams were close and it was anyone’s game.

GSU obtained a 10 point lead with a minute left, and the Cougars could not recover and dropped the game. 

Junior guard, Deontrae Warren, scored a season-hight 20 points, five rebounds, and four steals. Warren was 7-16 from the field and 5-12 from three point land. 

SXU didn’t have the best shooting night. They attempted 100 shots and came away with making 33 of them, leaving them a 33% and 14-46 from downtown, 30.4%.  

However, they had another great showing in terms of sharing the basketball and collected 22 assists, which is their second consecutive game in doing so. 

Wilson tallied 14 points, three rebounds, and two steals. Barr had a total of 12 points, three assists, and two steals. 

Despite the defeat, SXU is still tied for the NO. 2 seed in the CCAC standings. Their record sits at 9-3 with an overall record of 14-6. 

The Cougars next game will see them take on Trinity Christian College on Wed., Jan. 29, in Palos Heights, IL. The game is set to tip off at 7 p.m. They are looking to get back on the win column.
