Saint Xavier vs. Clark University (1-0) 

 

Saint Xavier’s Women’s soccer team triumphed over Clarke University on Tuesday, Sep. 3rd at the Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field. 

Junior midfielder Hailey Henry scored the lone goal of the game, giving her team a 1-0 win on the day. She opened up the scoring in the 49th minute of action, making it her first goal of the new season. 

Sophomore forward Alex Jonaitis had two attempts at goal, but gave out the assist for the winning goal. Henry scored the goal by Jonaitis creating the play from the right side of the pitch. From 10 yards out, she buried  the ball in the back of the net. 

In between the sticks was sophomore goalkeeper, Natalie Dybass. She recorded her first clean sheet of the season with one save. 

​​Junior midfielder/defender Hope Lewis had a few shots with one registering on target. 

Fifth-year senior midfielder Neida Ocampo and senior midfielder Louisa Schreiber attempted one shot. 

Senior midfielder Veronica Davilla, Dybass, senior midfielder/defender Jacqueline Gonzalez, Henry, Ocampo, Hope, and junior red shirt Isabal Guzman were on the pitch for 90 minutes. 

Both teams played a strong defensive game in the first half, but SXU came out in the second half to break the deadlock. The Cougars’s defense held strong after the goal to earn a hard-fought win.

Overall CU finished the game with nine shots to SXU’s seven shots. Saint Xavier had other chances to score but could not find the second. This was the very first matchup between these two sides in history.

 

Saint Xavier vs. Roosevelt University (1-1) 

 

Continuing the weekend’s events, Saint Xavier faced off against Roosevelt University on Sun. Sept. 14 at Morris Field in Arlington Heights. 

SXU and Roosevelt split points with the game finalizing 1-1. Davilla netted the equalizer in the 66th minute after a Jonaitis assist. 

Dybass had an impressive performance in goal, making five saves to keep SXU in the contest.

Jonaitis had three attempts at target, playing 84 minutes of action.  

Henry played the full 90  minutes, finishing the game with three shots with one on goal.  

Schreiber and Junior midfielder Vicki Ferrer each had one shot on the day. 

Sophomore defender Pamela Henandez was sent off after a double yellow card in the 81st minute of play to end the game. 

Dybass, Gonzalez, Henry, Hope, and Guzman played all 90 minutes. 

Roosevelt had a couple of chances to score to begin the game, but Dybass made some good saves to stop The Lakers from scoring. Roosevelt found the net at the 14th-minute mark to take a 1-0 advantage. 

Saint Xavier had 12 shots on goal with six finding the target, and The Lakers with 15 along with six to goal. 

Both teams played hard until the end and created great opportunities to score, but no team could walk away with all three points.  

Saint Xavier’s record stands at two wins, one draw, and one defeat. The Cougars’ next encounter will come on Saturday, Sep. 14 at Spring Arbor University in Spring Arbor Michigan before starting the CCAC season SXU is looking to add another win to the collection. The match is scheduled for a 6:00 pm kickoff.
