The SXU Men’s Volleyball team have only played three games this season, but they are already looking like they can go far. The Cougars kicked things off on January 17th, when they hosted the Aquinas College Saints at the Shannon Center. The Saints entered the game as the 6th best team in the country, while the Cougars entered as the 8th best team in the country.
The game started with a back and forth affair, but in the end, it was the Saints who pulled away in the end, winning the first set 25-22. Aquinas College jumped out to an early lead in the second set, but the Cougars started to storm back halfway through the set. They eventually tied things up at 18 and pulled away from there, winning the second set 25-20.
The third set was a near repeat of the second one, with Aquinas jumping out to a lead and the Cougars storming back. Much like the second set, the third set ended with the Cougars winning 25-22. The fourth set was a very close affair, with both teams tied up at 19 late in the set.
From then, the Saints completely dominated, eventually winning the set 25-19. In the fifth and final set, the Cougars and Saints duked it out, with both teams tied up at 10 late in the set. Thanks to some untimely errors from Aquinas and some clutch kills, the Cougars won the set 15-13 and won the game in the process. The Cougars picked up their first win of the season with the victory, while Aquinas fell to 3-1 with the loss.
The Cougars then travelled to Elgin, Illinois on January 21st to play the Judson University Eagles. Saint Xavier entered with a 1-0 record, while Judson entered with a 0-3 record. The Cougars completely dominated the first set, not even allowing the Eagles to have a lead. The Cougars eventually won the first set 25-16. The second set was more of the same dominant play from SXU, who won the set 25-14. The third and final set felt like the first and second ones on repeat as the Cougars yet again dominated and won 25-13. Saint Xavier improved to 2-0 with the win, while Judson fell to 0-4 with the loss.
Saint Xavier wrapped up things up on January 23rd when they travelled back to the Shannon Center to play the Viterbo University V-Hawks. This was Viterbo’s first game of the season. The first set started off close, but the Cougars pulled away near the end and won it 25-20. The second set was close, but SXU always kept a small lead and eventually won 25-19. The third and final set was very similar to the second one, with the Cougars and V-Hawks keeping it tight, but SXU always keeping a small lead.
Eventually the Cougars won 25-21. Saint Xavier improved to 3-0 with the win, while Viterbo fell to 0-1 with the loss. The Cougars play twice this week, first on January 31st against the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks and finally on February 1st against the Quincy University Hawks.
