Beginning on Monday, Sept. 20, 2021, Saint Xavier University celebrated their homecoming spirit week. Not only did SXU celebrate their homecoming, but also their 175th anniversary!
Here’s a quick recap of how the spirit week went: Monday, Sept. 20th, kicked off homecoming week with pajama day. Monday night ended with bowling night which a lot of students were enthused about, Tuesday was celebrated with Tie-Dye day as well as a packed volleyball game held in the Shannon Center. Wednesday was Jersey/Sports day and a film screening of Mission Impossible. Thursday celebrated homecoming with flannel day and participants received a raffle ticket for a Starbucks gift card, and to wrap things up, Friday was celebrated with none other than SXU spirit day and a bonfire.
Saturday, Sept. 25th, was the Homecoming game and it ended with a victory against University of Saint Francis! At around 5:00PM there was a women’s soccer game against Holy Cross College, and around 7:30PM started the men’s soccer game against Holy Cross College; all of which were held on Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field.
A first year undeclared student, Mya Cooper, gave us an insight how she felt about SXU’s spirit week.
“I thought spirit week was really fun. It’s always a good way to get students involved and for them to be connected with their university. The social events they had were just a great opportunity to get to meet more students, not just the ones in your classes.” She added on, “Overall, I enjoyed how it didn’t exactly end at the game, it went on to flag football.”
Another first year undeclared student, Evelyn Martinez stated, “It was such a fun-filled and exciting week. It was great to see so many students participate in spirit week, and the football game was a fantastic way to end the week with that amazing win!”
Additionally with being homecoming week, it was also Saint Xavier University’s 175th anniversary. On September 23rd, 1846, the Sisters Of Mercy arrived in Chicago. This is a very important occasion for SXU as the college university is Chicago’s first Catholic University and the first Mercy Institution of higher learning in the U.S.
To celebrate SXU’s 175th anniversary, they held Spirit of Mercy Day on Thursday. Spirit of Mercy Day started at noon in the chapel with mass. Following mass was the reception in the SXU Gallery, in which the art in the gallery will be displayed until October 18th.
