SXU posting zone advertising many campus events The Xavierite

It’s no secret that Saint Xavier University (SXU) isn’t a party school. On a commuter-based campus, most students are off-campus on Friday and Saturday nights, not tearing up a makeshift dance floor in Pacelli Hall.

Although we might not have the numbers to throw exciting ragers, does this really mean SXU isn’t a fun school? The Xavierite Editorial board recently came together to discuss if the problem with SXU’s social scene lies on the shoulders of the administration and staff or the students themselves.

Plenty of people on the editorial board would describe SXU as boring. In one member’s opinion, SXU is a “back-up school” for most. “I guess we’re rejects from our dream schools that we can’t afford. Due to this, all of our friends are away while we’re stuck here. It brings about a certain gloom and doom,” the aforementioned member explained.

Another member of the editorial board said SXU “definitely doesn’t have anything impressive about it.”

With students who don’t view their university as an exciting place to be, it’s no wonder the social scene isn’t lively.

Can this really be blamed on SXU? Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) host events all the time with often little attendance. There are yearly events such as homecoming which students can participate in. The events are there, but the students rarely are.

When it comes down to it, SXU is what you make of it. If you don’t attend events and don’t put yourself out there, you’ll have a boring experience.

“I personally see [the administration] trying its best to make SXU fun, so I’ll definitely throw blame on the students for being inactive and not giving these events a chance. They complain the most about the school being boring, but will go home before learning about the next event,” a member of the editorial board said.

For some, it’s an issue of scheduling.

“SXU creates events at the worst times of the day and week. There are multiple events that I considered going to throughout my time here but they were either at 7:00 p.m. or during the time when most people are in class. It’s one big factor on why students don’t attend events,” a member of the editorial board said.

Everyone’s schedules are different, and no one will possibly be able to attend every or even most SXU events. However, so many of us are guilty of attending little to none.

If you have class, you can try to go to the evening events. If not, you can try to go to the afternoon/morning events. There are ways to work these campus events into a busy schedule. The problem is, most students don’t want to.

“I believe the average student couldn’t care less for a social event put on by SXU, and I’m speaking from experience. […] In most cases, they just don’t want to be around random people they don’t know. In other words, they don’t want to get out of their comfort zones,” a member of the editorial board said.

Right now, the social scene at SXU is a one-sided effort. The administration and a few select students host events and most of the student body ignores them.

SXU won’t ever be the kind of school to throw massive parties, but students should know that when they apply and make their acceptance decision.

After they arrive at SXU, they must deal with the cards they’re dealt. They can choose to make the most of SXU by working events into their schedule and branching out, or they can lean into SXU’s solitary atmosphere and remain bored with their university.
