SXU Go 0-3 in Three Game Series Against Georgetown College

The Saint Xavier University’s baseball team started their series of three facing Georgetown College on Sat. Mar. 9 at home in Ferrell Memorial Field 

Game 1: 13-4 (L)

SXU’s first matchup came out to a 13-4 defeat

Saint Xavier opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first with senior catcher Evan Orzech, he  homered down the RF line. 

Georgetown bounced back and took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third with back-to-back home runs. 

At the bottom of the third inning, the Cougars tied it 2-2 with Orzech doubling right to  center which resulted in an RBI, junior outfielder Kevin Dowling coming in to score. 

SXU entered the top of the sixth with a slight advantage, but Georgetown drove in multiple runs that found the Cougars down 10-3 at the end of it. 

Junior catcher Josh Cunniff did score their final and fourth point at the bottom of the seventh. 

Junior utility player Justin Massingale had three assists along with three putouts. Cunnif finished the game with six putouts, and two assists. Freshman first baseman John Simececk recorded six putouts. 

Senior Pitcher Julian Vargas worked 2.0 innings of relief with two hits and he also got a strikeout. 

Senior pitcher Ryan Martin made his season debut, tossing 0.1 innings with three hits, three earned runs and a strikeout. 

Game 2: 12-5 (L)

In game two that afternoon, SXU could not secure a victory and fell 12-5. 

Georgetown opened up the top of the first by taking a 1-0 edge. SXU finlay scored their first run in the bottom of the sixth. Massingale advanced to second base, opening up the space for junior outfielder Sean Moore to get to safety. 

SXU added their third and fourth runs at the bottom of the seventh. 

Freshman utility player Nick Altobelli reached first on an error from the shortstop. Massingale advanced to third base, Moore scored alongside junior infielder Konner Hutchings. 

In the bottom of the ninth, Moore scored Saint Xavier’s final run. Altobelli reached on a fielder’s choice, Massingale ran to third and Moore came around for his second run of the game. 

Unfortunately it  was not enough for the Cougars and Georgetown had the upperhand in the series 2-0.

Massingale ended the game with two assists, sophomore infielder Gannon Burns had three assists and four putouts. Orzech concluded with nine putouts, and one assist. Junior infielder Sebastian Parchomenko finished with eight putouts and two walks. 

Game 3: 6-4  (L)

Saint Xavier closed their series with Georgetown on Sun. Mar. 10, SXU could not walk away with victory and went 0-3 with a final score of 6-4. 

They entered the bottom of the second down 2-0, but Simecek got them back in the game. 

Freshman infielder Noah Dreier reached first base on an error by the pitcher, Hutchings got to second base, and Simecek ran home to cut the lead in half. 

Georgetown extended their lead at the top of the fourth and gave themselves a 6-1 lead. SXU’s second and third runs came in the bottom of the fourth. Hutchings hit to  right  field which resulted in two RBI’s and Simecek scored again. 

The fourth and final run arrived at the bottom of the seventh with sophomore infielder Jackson McFarland doubling down on the right field line and Moore scored, but it was not enough to get the win. 

Moore came about with three putouts, along with Parchomenko. Hutchings finished with three assists, and two putouts. Cunniff concluded the afternoon with five putouts and Dreier with four. 

Following this three game series against Georgetown, their record is now 7-9. 

SXU are 3-3 at home and are yet to win an away game,  and are 4-2 on neutral grounds.  

They start their CACC games on Tues. Mar. 12 visiting University of St. Francis in Joliet. Game one is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m, and game two at 3:30 p.m.
