It was a chilly afternoon at Deaton Field when the Saint Xavier Cougars took on the Trinity International Trojans. The Trojans entered the game with a 1-4 record, while the Cougars entered the game with a 1-2 record, having lost their last two games.
The game kicked off with SXU getting the ball. The Cougars quarterback Alex Martinez, took advantage of a terrible kickoff from the Trojans and lead the Cougars down the field with nearly 40 yards of offense through the air. Eventually, SXU running back Vance McShane, punched the ball into the endzone and put the Cougars up 7-0 in the process. On the next Trinity International drive, the Trojans were pushed all the way back to their endzone, where they fumbled the ball. The Trojans managed to recover it in the endzone, but the damage was done.
The Cougars got the safety and now lead 9-0. Saint Xavier continued their offensive dominance on the next drive when Alex Martinez threw a 30-yard bomb to Nick Czeszewski for another touchdown, which put the Cougars up 16-0. After another failed Trinity International drive, Alex Martinez leads the Cougars down the field again and SXU running back Jamarri Watson punched it in to put SXU up 23-0. The Trojans finally got on the board in the final minutes of the first quarter when quarterback Nolan Brammer carried the ball into the endzone to make it 23-7 in favor of the Cougars.
However, SXU immediately responded with another Jamarri Watson touchdown to put them up 30-7. Alex Martinez took advantage of another failed Trojans drive when he threw a deep pass to Nick Czeszewski that was caught and taken into the endzone to put SXU up 37-7 to end the first quarter.
The second quarter started with the Cougars bringing in backup quarterback Daquayvious Thompson for his first appearance of the year. Thompson immediately made an impact when he threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Nick Czeszewski to put the Cougars up 44-7. The Trojans managed to respond with a touchdown of their own to make the score 44-14 and even stopped the SXU offense on their next drive.
However, that all fell apart when Nolan Brammer threw an interception to SXU defensive back Jarvis Carter, who returned the ball for a touchdown to put the Cougars up 51-20. Another SXU touchdown, this time from third-string freshman quarterback Ben Mazurkiewicz, put the Cougars up 58-20 going into half-time. Not much happened in the second half, though the Trojans did manage to score a touchdown to make it 58-26 in favor of the Cougars.
The Cougars defense held strong for the rest of the second half and eventually, the clock expired and the Cougars won 58-26. Saint Xavier improved to 2-2 with the win, while Trinity International fell to 1-5 with the loss. The Cougars travel to Arlington Heights, Illinois next weekend to play the Robert Morris Eagles. This was a much-needed win for the Cougars, who broke their losing streak in the process. Hopefully, they can keep this momentum up next week against the Eagles.
