The Saint Xavier Women’s Soccer team played in the CCAC Semifinals matchup against St. Ambrose. The game took place on Tuesday evening on November 7 in Davenport Iowa at St. Vincent’s Stadium.

The Cougars unfortunately saw their season come to an end after a 1-4 defeat after a hard fought effort. Junior midfielder/forward Louissa Schreiber scored the lone goal for SXU.

Saint Xavier’s starting lineup played the full 90 minutes of play with the exception of Senior defender Leida Ocampo who played 67 minutes of action.

Freshman Forward Citali Chavez had 42 minutes of play, along with sophomore defender Marrisa Murillo who came on at 34 minutes, and freshman midfielder Fatima Garduza who played for seven minutes.

Schreiber netted her 10 goal of the season at the 39 minute to give the Cougars the lead.

By scoring this goal she has reached a milestone, becoming the first SXU player to score ten or more goals in one season since Morgan Graves netted 11 during her freshman season in 2011

Schreiber is also the 13 player in SXU history to score 10 or more goals in one season. She is also the 23 player in Saint Xavier’s history to achieve this.

Freshman goalkeeper Nataile Dybas had a career high eight saves for SXU. She finished her season with a record in goal of 6-3-4 with 55 saves throughout the campaign in her first season defending the net.

After Scheriber’s goal the Fighting Bees fought back and evened the score just two minutes later.

In the first half SAU outshot SXU 1-13, outshooting SXU 20-2 overall throughout the game.

St. Ambrose started the game looking dangerous and were looking to strike early with good scoring opportunities in the first minutes of play, but Dybas did a good job to stop those early chances.

St. Ambrose then took the lead at the 52 minute to make it 1-2. They added two more goals in the 56 and 75 minutes to extend their lead to advance to the CCAC championship game, which took place on Friday, November 10.

SXU only had one shot on goal after the Schreiber goal in the 39 minute.

The Cougars struggled tot find the net to score to keep up with SAU..

It was freshman forward Alex Jonaitis who had the only other shot on goal, at the 52 minute of the game.

It was looking even at the half, but SAU came out of halftime the better team and outplayed the Cougars. It was a good fighting effort from Saint Xavier, but they just could not rally back into the game. They struggled to create another concrete chance to give them hope.

Saint Xavier’s season-ending stats saw the Cougars finish with 31 goals and 17 assists, averaging roughly 1.8 goals per match. They averaged 12.1 shots per game, their shot record being 108-206.

Goalkeepers allowed 21 goals and had a combined 72 saves on the season.

Schreiber ended the campaign leading the team with the most goals, scoring 10 in 17 appearances.

Right behind her is  Jonaitis with seven goals and six assists. She also had 17 appearances for the Cougars.

Saint Xavier ended their 2023 season as the No.5 seed in their conference with a final record of 8 wins, 4 draws, and 3 defeats. In conference play, they had 5 victories, 3 draws and 3 defeats.

The Cougars  had a great season overall, but are looking to come back better and stronger next season to make a push to the final game. SXU had many fun moments filled with game winners and well-played games, but they are looking to bounce back with an even better season next year.

The Cougars will return to action on the pitch in August of 2024 and look to finally reach the championship game and crown themselves CCAC champions.
