SXU defeats Governor’s State and Trinity International for back-to-back wins

Saint Xavier University women’s basketball team matched up against Governors State at University Park, Illinois on Wednesday, January, 18.

The Cougars topped Governor’s state by a final score of 63-52, a huge win for SXU on the road.

SXU got a good win as they bounced back from back-to-back defeats and were looking to build another winning streak.

SXU’s leading scorer was senior forward, Claire Austin, who erupted in the third quarter, where eight of her 14 points came from.

Austin shot 50% from the floor (6-12) and also had five rebounds and two blocks.

Sophomore guard Jenna Hernandez provided a spark off the bench for the Cougars. She supplied 13 points and three rebounds. She hit 3 from behind the arc and ended up on 5-11 shooting (46%).

Overall, the Cougars played really well in this game. They did start the first quarter out slowly only scoring three points and turning the ball over seven times in 10 minutes of play.

SXU could not get their offense flowing and shots were not falling.

But the Cougars shook off that slow start and had a good-flowing offense the rest of the game that led them to a win.

SXU shot well from downtown in this game, going 7-18 (38.9%).

The Cougars took on TIU on Saturday, January, 21 at the Shannon Center.

SXU had 3 leading scorers, Austin (19 points), Sophomore center, Alyssa Crenshaw (19 points), and Senior guard, Maia Fawcett, (17 points).

Austin became the 3rd woman in SXU history to tally 1,000 career rebounds, and she is 6th in all SXU history between men’s and women’s basketball.

SXU shot well in this game as they shot 37-75, 49.3 % from the field, and shot 7-23 from downtown, 30.4%. They also shot 14-19 from the charity stripe, 73.7%.

Overall the Cougars set the tone and tempo from the beginning. They came out with energy and they were making their shots.
