SXU Celebrates 175 Years with Fiesta de Familia/Family Fiesta 2021

On October 14, Saint Xavier University will host a Festival de la Familia to celebrate 175 years of mercy educational excellence.

Translated as “Family Fest,” the celebration is being held in the Warde Academic Center from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Attendees may enjoy food trucks, its culinary offerings, Mariachi Music, dancing, and fun for the whole family.

Through this open house event, all SXU community members are invited to hear from SXU President Laurie M. Joyner, Ph.D., as stated on the flyer. They also have a chance to meet the dedicated staff and faculty committed to students’ success and other learning initiatives.

In a letter sent out to all students and their families on October 5, Joyner said that students are attending the university at an ‘incredibly exciting’ time.

“We celebrate our 175th year of educational excellence, building on our Mercy heritage to create an even more vibrant and responsive institution that educates for competence, character and career success,” stated Joyner.

She continued: “Since our founding in 1846, Saint Xavier has transformed into a diverse and dynamic learning community, deeply committed to meeting the needs of students and families by remaining affordable, accessible, and accountable for excellent student outcomes.”

During the past five years of Joyner’s administration, she is proud of keeping tuition increases “among the lowest in the nation,” adding, “while increasing the level of financial support provided to students.”

According to the U.S. News & World Report, SXU remains the “Best Value” school, as well as the most affordable Catholic university in Illinois. Joyner further noted that “SXU provided students with the skills necessary to build meaningful careers and lead fulfilling lives.”

Since 2017, SXU has garnered more than $10 million in federal grants to invest directly in students’ needs so they would have access to ‘a wide range’ of student support services.

In addition, Joyner mentioned that students are able to “receive valuable instruction, hands-on-experience, and ongoing coaching by caring faculty and staff to help guide their educational journeys and prepare them for life after graduation.”

Joyner continued: “Our programs are highly successful, resulting in three consecutive years of improved student retention and our graduates continue to advance SXU’s tradition of excellence by pursuing advanced education or beginning their careers in a range of professional areas.”

Joyner looks forward to continuing great work together with SXU community members and families during this event and beyond.
