On February 27th, 2019, the VAC will be hosting an event in collaboration with Strathmore. Art Majors and Minors were initially informed of the event on January 22nd, 2018.
Strathmore, “a nonprofit multidisciplinary arts center and presenting organization” (www.strathmore.org) will be presenting topics surrounding the use of paper and its presence in the art world.
Several topics that will be touched upon by Strathmore were listed (but not limited to): The History of Paper, Handmade vs. Machine production, papers different components, environmentally conscious alternatives for paper, grades of paper, and its storage.
Attendees were also given complementary watercolor brushes, Strathmore paper, as well as a variety of drawing material. The only prerequisite was to have a minimum of 12 attendants RSVP by the 19th of February, 2019 to guarantee the presentation.
When contacted on the location of the event (which was not disclosed in the original email), Catherine Saunders relayed that the location would be reflective on the size of the audience that arrived to attend, but the event would most likely be held at Saint Xavier Visual Art Center Room 222.
Saunders also informed that “The Art and Design Department hosts many fun/ informative events each semester.“
On February 13th, students were informed that this event had become open to all majors, Art & Design or otherwise. This information was delivered along with news that at the time, SXU had not received the minimum required attendance and had 6 days left to procure the remainder.
Since then, the minimum has been met and the Strathmore presentation will be proceeding to the next stage.
Carina Jimenez is one such attendant. As a student out of the Art Department, Jimenez demonstrated an eagerness to attend. “Art is something that I like to dabble in, but the opportunities to attend events that let me explore creative outlets always seem so few and far between.”
Jimenez also shared the calm that comes with art. “There’s something so freeing about getting to attend and forget about all of my classes for a bit. No memorizing quotes, no calculations. For an hour and a half, I can forget about all of that and just enjoy the paper.”
