Students interested in making the campus more environmentally friendly and sustainable should keep an eye out for different upcoming events hosted by The Green Movement.

The Green Movement is a club that incorporates environmental concerns into different events on campus. Three events occuring in the next few weeks are the Aluminum Can Drive, Pop Up Thrift Store Clothing Drive, and a Pop Up Thrift Store.

The Aluminum Can Drive, a joint effort planned by The Green Movement and Service Club, will take place on Friday Oct. 20 at 12 a.m. until Friday Nov. 10 at 5 p.m. in the Warde Academic Center. This event is based around recycling aluminum cans due to approximately 36 billion aluminum cans being landfilled last year.

Students are asked to donate as many aluminum cans and pop tabs as possible. The person to collect and donate the most aluminum cans will win a prize at the end of the drive!

The Aluminum Can Drive creates both environmental and social benefits.

The drive will also be used to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House Charities. The Ronald McDonald House is a charity organization that houses and supports families with sick children so they can stay together while being mended to.

“I think of this as a two in one event. It’s helpful to not only the SXU community and keeping our areas clean, but it is also beneficial to the Ronald McDonald house,” says Emily Saldana, President of The Green Movement.

The pop tabs will be collected by Service Club and later donated to the Ronald McDonald House Charities to help renovate and update the houses cancer patients are staying at.

The aluminum cans collected will be sent to a recycling center. Proceeds will be used towards The Green Movement RSO in order to run future projects.

Another event The Green Movement is hosting is a Pop Up Thrift Store and Clothing Drive. The clothing drive, which began on Sunday Oct. 1, will run until Tuesday Oct. 31 at 1 p.m in the Warde.

There will be multiple drop-off boxes around the Warde building for students to drop items off.

Students are asked to donate any unwanted clothes, shoes, jewelry, accessories, etc. The items donated must be clean and in good condition. Undergarments will not be accepted.

Donated items will be used in the upcoming Pop Up Thrift Store, which will be taking place on Friday Nov. 3 from 1-5 p.m. in the Wiseman Lounge.

“Many clothes get thrown away each year. Fast fashion companies are becoming popular due to their cheaper prices. The Pop-Up thrift helps students get clothes for cheap without contributing to fast fashion,” says Saldana.

As much as 92 million tons of clothing are thrown away and sent to landfills each year.

Items will be priced at about $1-2. Students can pay with cash, Apple Pay, credit or debit cards.

Due to prices rising and the said state our economy is in at the moment, The Green Movement has decided to make prices more affordable for students who may not be able to afford new clothes at the moment.

“We planned this event because I grew up in a low income home and shopped at thrift stores for new clothes. Many people cannot afford new clothes right now so I wanted to give students an opportunity to buy affordable clothing,” according to Saldana.

Students are invited to join and participate in events The Green Movement has planned if interested.
