How to Survive the First Semester of the Year

The first three weeks of the Fall Semester have come and gone, so how do we prepare for the upcoming months ahead of us? Here are some steps to make the next few months seem a little less hectic.

One aspect of college that every  student can agree on is that it is very stressful and as students we do not have enough time in a day to get everything done. This attributes to more stress on the students due to the fact that school is a full time job itself and that is not the only job most students have.

As students, we get caught up in the rush of college and forget to take time for ourselves. It is okay to take some “me time” and do something that eases your mind, whether that means taking a small portion of the day or just a day out of the week to unwind and relieve the heavyweight of the school load.

Personally, I tend to take a day out of the week to clear my head. I go to Zumba class to dance it out, do a facemask, and read a couple chapters out a book I am reading outside of class.

While that is what I opt to do for my “me time”, everyone has their own way of relaxing. I suggest doing activities that calm your mind. Something even as simple as taking a nap can make a person feel refreshed.

It is important to take time for yourself, but it is also important to stay on top of your school work. Falling behind is easy when life outside of school becomes a rush just like it is inside of school. When we leave the classroom, the work comes with us and sometimes we forget to do a reading or two.

The utilization of the library plays a significant role in helping to get school work completed. When you are at the library it is a quiet zone. It is like walking into a tranquil little utopia made specifically for focusing on the tasks set out before you.

Making a list of all your assignments is also very beneficial. I write everything down that I need to do in a day and when I finish it, I get the pleasure of crossing it off the list. There is something so satisfying about crossing items off a to do list. Each item being crossed off releases a certain amount of stress from  your shoulders.

Staying on task is  another very important aspect used when getting school work done. Focusing on one assignment at a time and being unplugged from electronic devices not only increases focus, but also makes the time go  by much faster.

Taking breaks in between studying and assignments for different subjects is also a great way to give your mind a chance to rest and refocus. On these breaks, it would be a good time to check social media and reply to messages so you do not have the fear of missing something important.

After spending time working on assignments and studying, rewarding yourself is a great way to make the grueling hours spent on school work seem more bearable. Catch up on the Netflix show you have been binging, take a little cat nap, or get yourself a treat because you deserve it.
