This year’s Mario themed Homecoming Week featuring “Super Champio,” is taking place from Monday, Oct. 14 until Saturday, Oct. 19. The Student Activities Board (SAB) and Student Government Association (SGA) coordinated together to plan a series of Mario themed events to prepare for the Homecoming game.

On Monday, Oct. 14, the first event, “Champio’s Kingdom Quest” took place all over campus from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This Mario themed scavenger hunt consisted of Champio’s friends trapped in a power box. They were scattered around the Warde Academic Center (WAC), Andrew Conference Center, Shannon Center, and Resident Halls.

Once students found Champio’s friends, they were asked to bring the box they found back to the Student Organization Center (SOC L109B) for a prize. Students were limited to one prize each. The prize consisted of a customized T-shirt.

“We wanted students to feel like they themselves are going on their own fun adventures by creating hands-on events and experiences students can attend with friends and make new ones along the way,” explained Emily Saldana, President of SAB.

On Tuesday, Oct. 15, a DIY Tailgate Starter Pack took place in the Butler Reception Room. Students created their own starter pack with supplies to get them “excited and ready to cheer on our Cougar Football Team during Saturday’s game,” according to the SXU Den

The items included a mini tote bag, pom poms, temporary body tattoos, bubble wands and beanies with iron patches to customize.

Saldana shared, “If prizes, free merch and good times all week aren’t enough, I atleast hope an entire retro video game truck, mini games, a DJ, food and drinks, and t-shirts will be enough.”

No Homecoming events were planned on Wednesday, Oct. 16 due to the College to Career Expo taking place.

“Late Night Super Champio Edition” is planned to take place on Thursday, Oct. 17 in the Shannon Center Gym from 7–10 p.m. This event consists of “Champio Party 24” games. The games include pedal cart racing, obstacle course racing, basketball, volleyball and more.

Free food will be provided for those who attend.

“The Super Annual Bonfire” is taking place on Friday, Oct. 18 from 8–10 p.m. in the Regina Lot. Food, music, and giveaways will be incorporated. “Being able to enjoy fun events with other people seems like such a simple thing, but having the ability to form a tight knit community not only helps students become closer together but also develop long lasting relationships and connections for their future,” Saldana voiced.

The last Homecoming event that will be held is the Annual Homecoming Football Game. The Cougars will be facing St. Francis (III) on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 12–1 p.m. The game will be taking place at SXU’s Deaton Field.

Saldana shared creating the “Super Champio” theme because of the “giant influx of attendance and participation from the student body,” after last year’s “Barbie” theme. “We wanted students to once again reconnect with something iconic from their childhoods especially since homecoming week falls on the same week as midterms. It gives them a chance to relax and have fun,” Saldana further explained.
