The Future Is Still Bright For Star Wars

Not to worry, there is more “Baby Yoda” on the way. While the latest installment (and last), of the “Skywalker Saga,” The Rise of Skywalker, received luke-warm (pun intended) reactions from fans and critics alike–there is still much to look forward to in the next few years. The last installment of the “Skywalker Saga,” the story that started back in 1977 with Star Wars (which was later retitled, A New Hope) just wrapped up its journey.

So what else is there for fans to look forward to? Well you probably have seen a million memes of  “Baby Yoda” already, who was featured in the first season of the well-received Disney+ show, The Mandalorian. If you watched the hit show and enjoyed seeing “Baby Yoda” then you have something to look forward to this fall. The Mandalorian showrunner, Jon Favreau, confirmed late December of 2019 that the second season is set to be released Fall 2020.

Unlike The Rise of Skywalker, the first season of the western spaghetti inspired Star Wars show received positive reviews from fans, casual viewers, and critics! It is safe to say that the flagship show that Disney+ was launching with was a total hit and there is definitely more to come.

If Fall 2020 is too long of a wait for someone to get their fix for new Star Wars content, Disney+ is reviving The Clone Wars for one last season. When Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, one of the first tasks the company did was cancel the much loved animated series. This decision drew immediate backlash from fans.

As a response to the fan outcry, Disney struck a deal with Netflix in 2014 to release finished episodes that were not yet seen onto their streaming platform. While fans knew that there were stories still to be told in the series, fans were pretty satisfied with what was put out. Flashforward several years, Disney announced that they would be launching their own streaming service and one of the spotlight series would be The Clone Wars.

One of the reasons the show is so loved is because Star Wars creator George Lucas, had a heavy hand in bringing this series to life. The series takes place in between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith  which showed various aspects of the “Clone Wars.” The era was actually first introduced to audiences in 1977’s  A New Hope. For some fans, it seemed as if the series was a correction to the much controversial (not so much anymore) Prequel Trilogy. Seven years since the cancellation of the fan-favorite series, fans will finally get to see the series wrapped up in a nice bow.

Fans are also very eager in seeing the return of Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Disney+ Obi-Wan Kenobi series. The series is set to be streamed on Disney+ sometime in 2021. While there is plenty of Star Wars content to go around, Star Wars has to prove to the general audience that there is more to the franchise than the feature films. The next Star Wars film, which will start a new storyline in the universe, does not hit theaters until 2022. So the challenge is to show the causal fan that the franchise offers more than lightsabers clashing. The first season of The Mandalorian was just a taste of what a live-action Star Wars TV series can do on the small screen; for the next few years, fans of that galaxy far, far away will be residing on Disney+.
