Star Guardians Blast Back onto the Rift

League of Legends patch 9.18 marks the 4th annual Star Guardian event. Based on anime magical girl archetypes a la Sailor Moon, Madoka Magica, and Precure, etc. Riot Games is currently offering skins, in-game visual modifications to the model, of some of their most popular playable champions.

This year, Riot Games is offering Star Guardian skins for playable “champions” Zoe, Xayah, Rakan, and Neeko. They will also be including a Prestigious Skin (an exclusive, difficult to obtain alternate model) for Neeko. These playable characters are some of Riot’s more recent additions to the roster, with past years selections mainly composed of “champions” that have been in the game since 2010.

In the promotion of this year’s Star Guardian event, Riot Games has also released an animated cinematic feature titled “Light & Shadow”. The video on League of Legends’ official YouTube channel has garnered almost 4 million views in less than 4 days. The video features the latest musical theme for the Star Guardian event, “Light & Shadow”, composed by Hiroyuki Sawano with vocals by Gemie. Hiroyuki Sawano has also composed music for many popular animes in the past, including Attack on Titan, Blue Exorcist, and Kill La Kill.

This year’s Star Guardian event was highly anticipated, as 2018’s event didn’t live quite up to expectations. Controversy has surrounded the pricing system Riot Games attempted to implement for what was essentially a remodel with no additional animations, sound effects or video effects. These adjustments usually warrant a price increase. With the debate lasting many weeks, ultimately culminating in Riot Games reluctantly reducing the price.

In addition, fans may be disappointed to not see the return of Invasion, a game mode exclusive to the Star Guardian event. In the game players may play as their favorite Star Guardians, working together to fight hordes of enemies, and having the opportunity to test the skins before committing to their purchase.
