Change is inevitable; ironically, that is one of the few consistencies in life. The world as we know it has changed so much in the last few years alone, from how we are expected to participate in school to how we interact with each other on a day-to-day basis.
Human nature is actually quite receptive to change. Change that benefits us, that is.
In this issue of the Xavierite, the Editorial Board discussed changes in our lives.
A member of the board pointed out that “lockdown forced us all into isolation, and it’s clear that people’s priorities have shifted.”
In a post-quarantine world, many people have found themselves to be very different people. They have very different goals and interests than what they had prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
What we once deemed to be essential to our lives has become miniscule or altogether been disregarded in some cases.
A board member mentioned that “in general, I’ve found that nothing is consistent for me.”
Another added that “I’ve noticed that I always have something to do now, whether it be school or my personal life.” They expressed that they liked this change.
An agreement could not be reached on whether or not change was likable. While one member noted that change scared them, another member noted that they found change to be nice.
No one will ever agree on whether or not change is likable, as what makes change so important is the fact that what needs to change is sometimes what others do not see as an issue.
When someone is set in their ways or in their beliefs, it is difficult to persuade them to change. It is especially difficult when they do not believe that they need to change.
Despite that, a majority of the board agrees that change is a necessity.
One member of the board stated that they “believe change is important because it helps one grow, and evolve. If one is to stick themself to a singular position, it invokes laziness and a certain annoyance when change is forced upon them.”
However, another member pointed out that in some situations change is not necessary. “Change can bring much needed improvement, but it can also unnecessarily alter a system that’s working well,” they added.
As humans, we must foster an environment where change can happen when needed. In complete honesty, it makes no sense to snuff out change when the world around us requires it.
In this day and age, the one thing that we know for certain is that what we know to be true one day can change as soon as the next morning. Not much in life is certain, but one thing that is certain is that in the end, we will be okay.
Change ensures that we follow the road best suited for us. It pushes us to focus on the future and allows things that are harmful to us to end.
What is meant to pass will pass and what is meant to stay will stay. That is why change is okay, because good change ensures that we will be okay.
