Softball Splits Double Header against Madonna

The Cougars laced up their cleats on Friday the 25th for a double header against nationally ranked no. 14 Madonna University, in Brighton, Michigan.

Fifth year senior, Maddie Meisl, has been on fire over the Cougars’ last five games. She’s hitting an astounding .769 (10-13). She went 4-5 on the day in the Madonna double header and scored two runs as well.

Crusaders pitcher, Maeson Schlaud, tossed a complete game shutout in game one. Allowing just two hits, Lyda Robinson and Meisl, and recorded 11 strikeouts.

Robinson led the game off with a single up the middle and quickly stole second, but got stranded on third to end the inning.

Madonna University scored three runs in the third and two in the fifth, but they only needed one run to win this game because of the strong outing from Schlaud.

Game 2 was ultimately a back and forth battle, but SXU came out on top this time.

The first run of the game came in the second inning from a Meisl single to left.

MU tied it up in the fourth, but the Cougars answered back in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run double to center from Robinson.

But once again, Madonna came back and tied the game in the fifth on a sacrifice fly and a single.

Down to their final six outs, Meisl led the bottom of the sixth off with a ground rule double. Robinson pushed her to third with a SAC bunt, and Morgan Haefling recorded the game winning RBI with a single to center.

The Cougars pick up play again on Sunday, March 6th for The Spring Games in Kissimmee, Florida. Their first game is scheduled for 8:00am against Siena Heights University, followed up by a game against University of Northwestern Ohio at 10:15am.
