The 16-1 Saint Xavier Cougars were at home for a double header against the 12-15 Ashford University Saints. The weather was sunny, and the field was ripe which means both teams were ready to play some ball.
Game 1
In the first game of the double header, Saint Xavier dominated in 5 innings, beating the Ashford Saints 9 runs to 1. The game was tied at 0-0 until the end of the first when the Cougars started to run away with it.
At the bottom of the first, SXU had 4 runs behind junior Brittany Plimmer’s two-run double, and added to this with senior Nicole Nonnemacher’s two-run homer.
The Cougars continued the hot run, heading into the bottom of the third in which they scored two more runs behind a sacrifice fly by senior Jessica Arebalo, and a RBI double by Nonnemacher.
This run put Saint Xavier’s lead over Ashford University at 6-0. Even though the game was starting to get away from them, and their hope was waning, the Ashford Saints weren’t going to get shut out as they finally scored off a single run at the top of the fourth to bring the game to 6-1.
In the end, SXU finished off the first game scoring 3 more runs in the fifth with an RBI by senior Kasey Kanaga, a fielding error, and a RBI on a sacrifice fly by Plimmer.
Senior Nicole Nonnemacher had a fantastic game as she only allowed 2 hits one run and a walk as a pitcher, and went 2-3 for the game with a double, a home run, and 3 RBI’s.
A fantastic game form Nonnemacher, and a great game played by the Cougars, but we’ve only just begun. There’s still one more game to be played between the two teams. Will the Cougars be able to walk away with two victories on the day?
Game 2
SXU started off the game hot once again as they scored 3 runs in the bottom of the first inning. Two of the 3 runs came from freshman first basemen Katie Gloff’s two-run single, and the other came from an in-field error. The fun ended there for SXU as the Ashford Saints looked to answer the SXU’s early run.
At the top of the second, sophomore Caroline Kuzel gave up two walks, which eventually turned into a 2 run double that put the game at 3-2. Fast-Forward to the top of the fourth, and Ashford hit a left fielder home run to tie the game at 3-3.
With both teams being unable to score moving forward, the game went to extra innings in which Ashford scored a run at the top of the eighth inning to put them up 4 runs to 3.
When SXU went up to bat, freshman Jenna Hasse got a single. Despite this, SXU wasn’t able to turn the hit to a scoring opportunity, and lost a close one to Ashford at 4-3, splitting the doubleheader between the two teams, and leaving SXU with a 16-2 overall record.
Let’s show our softball team some support as they look to compete in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference with a doubleheader against University of St. Francis. Also, remember to keep it locked here at the Xavierite for all your sports and on-campus news.
