Saint Xavier University celebrated its 175th birthday on October 12th. Founded by the Sisters of Mercy, Saint Xavier has educated young people to work towards the common good. To bring social justice to our world. Now more than ever, our world needs social justice, and the teachings of the Sisters of Mercy. Here are just a few examples of what we mean.
This past weekend a now former police officer for Fort Worth police department, was arrested for murder. Aaron Dean “allegedly” walked into Atatiana Jefferson’s house and shot her multiple times without announcing himself as a cop. We would like to add that Atatiana Jefferson is African American and she was shot while playing video games with her nephew in her own home. Cops need to be reminded they are not able to just go in and shoot whoever they want. With power comes responsibility and they cannot think they will not receive any consequences for their terrible mistakes.
Another issue that involves social justice is our current immigration policy. One of the Sisters of Mercy’s critical concerns would be immigration. Currently there are child immigrants in cages and suffering because they are not able to cross the border for a better life. We should be kind to all and welcome everyone into the country since America is a country of immigrants.
Our President, Donald Trump, came out and said that he can murder someone in plain daylight and not get in trouble for it. What’s really terrible about that statement is that he is right. He has gotten away with many terrible statements he said in public and nobody seems to question it. He seems to get away with everything just because he has money and is the President of the United States.
It seems that people that are rich or have a high status are held to a different standard when it comes to the law. But just because someone is a cop that does not mean they are above the law. They should practice what they preach as an ambassador of the law. There are people in jail who got caught for marijana and are still in prison longer than an officer who murdered an innocent person.
It is partly our fault as a society for not holding the people who are in power and are seen as positive role models in society responsible for their actions. As a society we would like to think there is a right and a wrong but we hope that other people will do something about it, instead of us actually standing up to people in power for their actions.
