Singin’ in the Rain: Cougars Dominate in Florida Amid Rain Delays

The Saint Xavier University Softball team traveled down to Kissimmee, Florida, for The Spring Games during the week of March 6. Despite many of the games being called off due to rain, that didn’t stop the Cougars from dominating the teams they did play.

Play for SXU started on the morning of March 6 against Siena Heights University, trampling the Saints 10-0 in just five innings.

The Cougars were powered by Brittany Schultz in the opener, collecting three extra base hits, including a home run in the third inning.

Unfortunately, a clerical error resulted in SXU’s next game of the day to be postponed, so they looked forward to upcoming games.

The Cougars would play three of their next four games before rain interfered with games.

All three of those wins were in grand fashion, outsourcing opponents 35-8. Including a 17-3 five inning victory against Bethel University.

The 17-3 win over Bethel was backed by a stellar performance at the plate by Lyda Robinson. She went 4-5 with a triple and two RBIs, as well as scoring three runs and stealing three bases.

Three of the next seven games on Saint Xavier’s schedule would not get played due to poor weather conditions, including both games on the last day of the tournament. Despite this, the Cougars made sure to finish out strong in Kissimmee.

The Cougars went on to win three of their final four games, their only loss of the week coming from Dordt University.

Against Dordt, Laila Summers was relieved by Julianna Claas after just 1.1 innings.

Claas completely shutdown the Defenders offense for the remainder of the game, but the Cougars could only muster one run off of DU pitcher Abby Kraemer.

Saint Xavier run-ruled two more opponents before the tournament wrapped up. A 15-1 victory over Carlow University and a 9-0 win in their last game against Doane University.

Alyssa Frey was on the mound for both of these games as she led the Cougars to monstrous victories. She allowed only five hits and one run between both games, as well as recording five strikeouts over the 10 innings.

The Cougars pick up play again this Friday, the 18th, against Aquinas College at the SXU Softball Field. The first game of the double header is scheduled for 3pm.
