Hamiley and Donivin Truty want to start a Board Game Club at SXU to unite the school’s community of game enthusiasts.

Donivin Truty is a Computer Science major at SXU, who recently transferred from Loyola. He saw a lack of space for the nerdier side of the school and decided to start a Board Game Club to find and connect people with similar interests.

He invited his sister, Hamiley Truty, to help him organize the club, as they both have a huge love and interest in playing board games. They hope that with the introduction of the club, they will find people who share their interest in different kinds of board games.

The goal is to “Bring together a community of nerds” as Hamiley put it. She sees connecting with others as vital to creating a healthy school environment and is proud to be adding something fun and wholesome to SXU.

Club members will play a variety of engaging games, such as “Exploding Kittens”, “Unstable Unicorns”, “Here To Slay”, and “A House On A Hill” among others. Donivin and Hamiley want to expose people to different kinds of board games and to stray away from traditional games, such as “Sorry” and “Monopoly” in order to make the club feel like a full experience.

“We wanted to bring people together, even if they have no clue what they’re doing,” Hamiley said of the club’s purpose.

Even in straying away from popular board games, Donivin did state that, “If you have things you want to contribute, we’d be more than happy to do it”. On top of the games the siblings will supply, they’ve already had requests for tabletop and card games such as “Cyberpunk 2020” and “Magic The Gathering”.

The club would meet at least once a week to play games, and there would be a monthly meeting to play the “game of the month”, which all members would be encouraged to participate in. Hamiley also mentioned the idea of having special nights for games such as “Dungeons And Dragons,” as well as any other special events that club members would like to have.

They currently have their sights set on the Wiseman Lounge as a meeting location, though Donivin said that they could play “anywhere with a bunch of tables and chairs.”

For the siblings, playing board games is a family passion. The two grew up in a “board game savvy” household, and this is a passion they are eager to share with SXU. As such, they will provide most of the club’s games and supplies to start.

Donivin says that the Board Game Club is “Purely for relaxation. If you’ve had a stressful week, come down and play board games.” Attendance won’t be strict, and the club will operate on a small budget. The two siblings want this club to be a relaxed and open environment for everyone involved.

Hamiley and Donivin have recognized that there have been attempts to create similar game clubs, though the two siblings hope that their RSO will be a reality by next semester. They plan to hold a general meeting in the near future so that they can carve out the structure of the club.

Currently, the Board Game Club is still in the early stages. They have three members and are looking to gain more traction for what they think will be a great addition to SXU’s mix of RSOs. Likewise, they are still putting together their executive board, with Professor Vanderhyde acting as the club’s advisor, Donivin serving as president, and Hamiley serving as both treasurer and secretary.

The two are in need of a vice president, as well as another nine members, and are willing to accept anyone with an interest in board games.

Those who’d like to show their enthusiasm can email sxuboardgameclub@gmail.com with their name, grade level, and a game they’d like the club to play. From there, you will be sent more information on the club and its requirements and asked to list your game and snack preferences.
