Should Students Strive to be More Involved on Campus?

SXU hosted their annual Synergy Leadership Summit on Saturday, February 18th. The event was led by Natalie Page, the Chief Diversity Officer that joined Saint  Xavier in 2022.

As students advance their educational careers, many have aspirations of becoming managers in leadership positions, and opportunities such as the Synergy Leadership Summit can help them to achieve such a goal.

The summit is self-described as “an annual student-led leadership conference with educational sessions, student panels, engaging activities, and service projects to help students understand various aspects of leadership and work to become diverse, inclusive and innovative leaders.”

With many opportunities for students to enhance their education and leadership talents, students who attended recorded positive results.

When asked if the summit benefited students’ educational and leadership potential, one board member added they “really liked it” and thought the event “helped you assess how you lead.”

This is not the only school-run event that students have participated in and felt improved their opportunities on campus.

When asking students whether they enjoyed school events they attended, the answers were overwhelmingly positive.

A board member added that she “found herself more engaged” in school and social life.

Another agreed, adding that the events were “well organized” and they “made a lot of friends.”

The Saint  Xavier student body is lucky to have fellow students and staff dedicated to planning special events such as Synergy to enhance their educational opportunities.

Simpler events, such as “Build a Champ” which was hosted during Valentine’s week, served as a fun opportunity for students to stuff their own Champ and give it to someone special in their lives.

Though not as traditionally educational, “Build a Champ” was a way for students to decompress, meet some new friends, and enjoy a part of their day on campus.

Many other events, such as game nights or movie nights, are more laid-back activities for students.

It’s things like this that the student body really appreciates and helps to make SXU a friendly campus.

There are always aspects of planning school events that can be improved on, however, whether that be the timing, communication, or location.

Some students added that it can be difficult to attend school activities when they are on sports teams.

Oftentimes, events take place on the same day or at the same time as sports games.

One board member said the events can be “overcrowded” and difficult to navigate.

All that being said, it’s more than fair to say that Saint  Xavier has done a great job providing enough on-campus activities for students.

It’s also fair to say that more students should work to attend such activities.

Whether there be genuine educational and leadership events like summits or a chill and relaxed volleyball game outside, there’s something interesting and worthwhile for everyone.

SXU offers online events for commuters as well, making involvement through the school easy and accessible.

Every event the school hosts has loads of communication through flyers on the walls of the school or emails sent to the student inbox.

The opportunity is there for every student to take.
