“Snow & Poison” by Melissa De La Cruz. If you’re looking for a Snow-White retelling and cannot wait until Disney’s upcoming live-action Snow White remake, then you might like this historical retelling. Lady Sophie, nicknamed Snow White by her people, has led a charming life in Bavaria, but her life begins to change as her father marries for the second time. Lady Sophie must question, is her stepmother truly wicked, or is someone else carrying a wicked heart?
“Crumbs” by Daine Stirling. Ray is a young seer struggling with her powers. She always goes to her favorite café ordering one of the magic treats they offer. The treat? Romance. Ray cannot use her powers to see into the distant future like other seers, but if she could see that romance might just find her in the young barista Laurie. This graphic novel is perfect for fans of the barista x customer trope.
“Alphabet of Thorn” by Patrica A McKillip. The day that the new queen of Raine is crowned, a translator working in the palace receives a book written in a strange language of thornlike characters. As Nepenthe, the translator, unlocks the language’s secret, she learns of a legend from the ancient past that involves her and the queen in an intrigue that threatens the kingdom itself. This book is perfect for those who want to read a story about a mother’s love for her daughter that transcends years.
“Chivalry” by Neil Gaiman. A charming graphic novel that tells the story of what happens when a sweet old woman named Mrs Whittaker accidentally stumbles upon the holy grail at her local thrift store. Mrs. Whittaker thinks the holy grail will look fine on her mantle piece, but her quiet life is about to be disrupted by an Athuerian knight who sets out on a quest to prove to her that chivalry is not dead.
“Poland, a Green Land” by Aharon Appelfled. Yaakov Fine never paid attention to his parents’ stories about their upbringing in Poland. After his parents’ passing Yaakov decides to visit the land his parents left behind. Yaakov finds himself a stranger in a strange land as he tries to find roots in a land that he never called home. Although, this book’s genre isn’t necessarily fantasy its writing feels so magical that I can’t exclude it from the list.
