There is currently a campaign occurring on Saint Xavier University’s campus called She is Made.
The campaign originated as a final class project in the Jurisprudence and Gender course with a focus on negative advertisements in media.
Vicky Villagomez, a senior Psychology major and a member of the campaign, explained, “The ultimate goal of this campaign to stop the unrealistic views of people communicated by the media. On a smaller level the class as a whole has the goal to spread the word that everyone is fine the way they are.”
She continues, “the models we see in ads don’t even look like the pictures in the ad, and as a society we need to stop trying to achieve that unrealistic portrayal.”
In an attempt to get the word out there to people on campus they began by putting flyers up all over campus, having tables set up in the diner related to the campaign, as well as televisions set up with clips from the documentary Killing Us Softly.
This week the videos will be playing in both the diner and the Shannon Center. There will also be an event this Thursday, November 21, to better educate people about the She is Made campaign.
During the event people will be able to write down how negative advertisements have affected them personally.
While this began as an end of the semester project, people who want continue with the campaign. “There is one person in particular wants to create a student organization, and I think that would be absolutely amazing. I believe she started filing out paper work to create the club, so next semester, or the semester after it will be up and running,” stated Villagomez.
