It was a cold Saturday afternoon in Deerfield, Illinois when the Saint Xavier Cougars came into town to face the Trinity International Trojans.
SXU entered the game with a record of 4-3, fresh off of a 61-32 victory over Robert Morris University last week. Trinity entered the game with a record of 0-5 and were coming off of a 28-77 defeat to Olivet Nazarene University last week.
In front of 200 fans, the game kicked off with Trinity getting the ball. The Trojans marched down the field and went to attempt a 30 yard field goal, but it went wide right. SXU got the ball and was eventually able to kick a 24 yard field goal to put them up 3-0.
After neither team got anything done, the first quarter came to an end with the Cougars up 3-0. The Cougars got the ball to start the second quarter and after a few minutes, SXU running back Eric Williams Jr. ran for a 7 yard touchdown to make it 10-0 in favor of the Cougars.
After another failed Trinity drive, SXU quarterback Justin Hunniford threw a 15 yard touchdown pass to Harold Davis to make it 17-0 Cougars. Trinity got the ball back and, after a long drive, they kicked a 22 yard field goal to make it 17-3 Cougars.
With the clock running down to the end of the half, SXU marched all the way down to the endzone, where Hunniford threw a touchdown pass to Davis to put the Cougars up 24-3.
With that, the first half was over and SXU was up 24-3. The third quarter began with a failed Cougars drive.
Trinity got the ball back, but quarterback Jonathan Santos threw an interception to SXU defenseman Dmitri Joe, who returned the ball for a 37 yard touchdown to put the Cougars up 31-3. Trinity failed to capitalize on another drive and were forced to punt the ball away.
SXU wide receiver Nick Czeszewski returned the punt all the way to the 4 yard line. Harold Davis then ran the ball into the endzone on the following play to put the Cougars up 38-3.
Neither team could get much done before the third quarter came to an end.
After a failed Trojan drive to start the quarter, SXU got the ball back and were able to kick a 25 yard field goal to put the Cougars up 41-3. After a few failed drives from both teams, Trinity was able to kick a field goal to make it 41-6 Cougars.
The game came to an end after a Cougars drive that intentionally ran down the clock, ending the game with a score of 41-6 in favor of the Cougars. Trinity International fell to 0-6 on the year and will be facing Robert Morris University next week.
SXU improved to 5-3 on the year and will be facing Saint Ambrose University next week in Davenport, Iowa.
