SXU quarterback Justin Hunniford gets ready to throw the ball — SXU Athletics

It was a cloudy night in Upland, Indiana as the Saint Xavier Cougars came into town to play the Taylor Trojans. The Cougars entered the game with a 2-3 record, coming off of a 19-27 heartbreaking loss to St. Francis (IN) last week.

The Trojans entered the game with a 2-1 record, coming off of a 50-13 victory over Trinity International University last week. With 2,317 people in attendance, the game kicked off and SXU got the ball first.

The Cougars could not do that much with the ball and were forced to punt it to the Trojans. The Trojans took advantage of a failed first drive from the Cougars and scored on a 38 yard pass to make it 7-0 Trojans.

SXU got the ball back and started making their way down the field with a vengeance. Eventually, SXU quarterback Justin Hunniford broke out of the pocket and ran 14 yards for a touchdown to make it tied 7-7.

The SXU defense held strong on the next Taylor drive, eventually sacking their quarterback and forcing them to punt. The Cougars continued to ride their wave of momentum when Hunniford thew a two yard touchdown pass to Elliott Pipkin to make it 14-7 Cougars. The defense continued to be unstoppable and forced Taylor to punt it away.

Saint Xavier got the ball back and marched down the field. Eventually, Justin Hunniford threw a 27 yard touchdown pass to Chris Simmons, to make it 21-7 Cougars.

The first quarter came to a close with the Cougars up 21-7. After another failed drive from the Trojans, the Cougars got the ball back and got another touchdown when Justin Hunniford threw his fourth touchdown of the game to Chris Simmons to put the Cougars up 28-7.

After both teams had a few failed drives, the Cougars were able to capitalize and score on another Justin Hunniford touchdown to make it 35-7 Cougars. The first half came to a close with the Cougars up 35-7.

SXU got the ball back in the third quarter and fumbled the ball, which lead to Taylor picking up the ball and running all the way to the endzone to make it 35-14 Cougars.

After a failed SXU drive, the Trojans got the ball back and got a touchdown and a two point conversion to make it 35-22 Cougars. The Cougars got the ball back, but couldn’t do much, and were forced to punt it away.

On the punt, the Trojans returned it all the way to the endzone to make it 35-29 Cougars.

SXU eventually got back on track with another Justin Hunniford touchdown to make it 42-29 Cougars. After a failed Taylor drive, the Cougars got the ball back.

After a very long drive, Justin Hunniford threw a 14 yard touchdown to Harold Davis to make it 49-29 Cougars. The Trojans got the ball back and were able to get a quick touchdown to make it 49-36. SXU got the ball back and ran out the clock, ending the game.

The Saint Xavier Cougars defeated the Taylor Trojans with a final score of 49-36.

The Cougars are now 3-3 and now prepare to face Robert Morris University next Saturday at Deaton Field.
