It was a cloudy day in Joliet, Illinois when the Saint Xavier Cougars played the Robert Morris Eagles.
The Cougars came into the game with a 3-3 record, fresh off of a 49-36 victory over Taylor University last week.
The Eagles came into the game with a 1-4 record, fresh off of a 7-0 upset victory over the 8th best team in the NAIA, Concordia University.
In front of 1,000 people at Joliet Memorial Stadium, the Eagles kicked the ball off to start the game.
The Cougars took advantage immediately when quarterback Justin Hunniford threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Chris Simmons to put the Cougars up 7-0.
After a failed Eagles drive, SXU got the ball back and marched down the field.
Eventually, SXU wide receiver Harold Davis ran the ball into the endzone for a touchdown to put the Cougars up 14-0.
Saint Xavier got the ball back after another failed Robert Morris drive and earned another touchdown, this time on the back of running back Vance McShane and putting them up 21-0.
The Cougars got another chance after Robert Morris failed to do anything with the ball.
SXU took advantage of the Eagles’ failures when Justin Hunniford threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Harold Davis to put the Cougars up 28-0.
After a field goal from SXU, the first quarter ended with the Cougars up 31-0.
After both teams couldn’t do much with the ball, Robert Morris got on the board when quarterback Jake Vincent threw a 49-yard pass to Mike Moss to make the score 31-7.
The Cougars immediately struck back when Justin Hunniford threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Nick Czeszewski to put the Cougars up 38-7.
The Eagles got the ball back, but the SXU defense sacked Jake Vincent in the endzone for the safety, putting them up 40-7.
Robert Morris eventually got the ball back and after a long drive, Vincent threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Michael Berry to make it 40-13 in favor of the Cougars.
The halftime whistle blew and both teams went to the locker rooms. After a short break, the game was back on with Robert Morris striking right out of the gates with a touchdown to make the score 40-19 in favor of SXU.
After a long Cougar drive, Justin Hunniford eventually threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Elliott Pipkin to put the Cougars up 47-19.
Neither team could really do much before the third quarter came to a close.
The Cougars struck as soon as the fourth quarter began when running back Eric Williams Jr. ran in for a 23 yard touch-down, putting the Cougars up 54-19. The Cougars eventually got the ball
back and scored another touchdown, putting SXU up 61-19.
Robert Morris got the ball back and were able to get a touchdown to make the score 61-26 in favor of SXU, but by then, it was too late for a comeback.
Despite another Eagles touchdown, the game ended with a score of 61-32, in favor of the Cougars.
SXU is now 4-3 on the year and will be playing Trinity International University next Saturday at 1:00 PM in Deerfield.
