Saint Xavier University’s (SXU) student media has introduced a new student E-magazine entitled The Bell.
The magazine is named after the cast iron bell, located near the main entrance of the Warde Academic Center at SXU.
The first issue was released on October 6 through the university’s online newspaper, The Xavierite. The magazine covered an immense amount of events happening in the SXU community such as, the celebration of President Laurie M. Joyners’s inauguration day.
Other stories included an interview with WXAV Program Director, Mia Guevara, and Music Director, Sean Anderson. The two spoke about their trip last year to Washington D.C. where they attended the White House for College Radio Day.
Other articles featured in the The Bell included SXU women’s sports, an in depth interview with President Laurie M. Joyner, Ph.D., and a piece on how SXU stands with DACA.
The E-magazine seems to mimic a lot of the same stories from The Xavierite, however, senior and managing editor, Jill Augustine stated “The Bell may include some of the similar stories included in The Xavierite, but The Bell goes more in-depth with the stories, leading to longer stories.”
Augustine, who is majoring in Communications, and minoring in Graphic Design and Spanish, continued, “The Bell is solely online, like The Xavierite. The Bell is also different from SXU’s [other] media because we’re only a team of two people.”
Like most organizations at SXU, funds are extremely tight, “The Bell is new and we don’t have the funds yet for more staff, so we work extra hard-along with our gracious volunteer writers-to make The Bell successful,” said Augustine.
Volunteer writers are senior Meghan Heenan, senior Mike Rankin, and senior Ernesto Hernandez. Rankin and Hernandez are both sports writers for The Xavierite.
The other member of the magazine is senior Kenya Ramirez. Ramirez is the features editor.
Ramirez is a majoring in English with concentrations in Philosophy, Writing, and Communications.
“I’m excited to write about all the amazing internships other students are working on that most of the SXU students are not aware that they can get,” commented Ramirez.
The magazine advisor is SXU’s Peter Kreten. Kreten is the Director of Student Media. He oversees The Bell, The Xavierite, and WXAV Radio.
Currently, the magazine is scheduled to publish twice a semester and Augustine promises that they will be worth the read, saying, “Students can expect a variety of different stories related to SXU, whether it’s news, sports, entertainment, campus stories, or student stories.
Every article included in The Bell is centered around an SXU topic, often including student quotes and opinions.”
No matter what issues the new magazine may face, both Augustine and Ramirez are up for the challenge.
“I think students often think they can’t get into high end internships because they don’t go to Northwestern or DePaul and those are the schools that tend to have better opportunities, but it’s not the case,” said Ramirez.
Both writers have high hopes for the E-magazine as Augustine stated, “What made me [want] to be a part of this magazine is the fact that it’s solely an online magazine.
This is a newer medium of communication, and I wanted to give it a try. Also, since it’s s brand new thing, I’ve been given the opportunity to create it and mold it in my own vision, and set the standards for future productions of the magazine after me, which is quite an honor!”
