Saint Xavier University (SXU) hosted their annual Registered Student Organization (RSO) fair on Aug. 26.
Over 35 RSOs represented their groups to recruit new students.
The RSO fair was a great opportunity for those who were looking to involve themselves more on campus.
It also introduced all the RSOs SXU has to offer to the campus community.
Organizations spanned a variety of interests, from academic and professional RSOs like the National Society of Collegiate Scholars to special interest RSOs such as the Chapel Choir.
Giuliana Islas, Orientation and Belonging Coordinator in Student Life, highly suggests students join an RSO.
Islas states, “The student experience is not just what happens in the classroom. It’s the friendships and connections that you make outside of the classroom as well.”
Students will also be more involved on campus at SXU and challenged to step outside of their comfort zones to confront any fears that they may have by joining an RSO.
Aldo Pozos, who is the co-vice president of Drama Club, says he was initially fearful of joining, but after attending an informational meeting, that fear went away.
“It didn’t feel like a lot of pressure. It was more so going into a group of friends to hang out with and practice your lines,” states Pozos.
Pozos says that the Drama Club is meant to be an open club to all students—with or without experience.
RSOs not only provide a sense of comfort and inclusivity but can also help prepare students professionally.
The RSO Women Entering Business is one of many organizations pertaining to career preparation.
Martha Romeo, president of Women Entering Business, says that their goal is to help prepare women for the workforce.
Romeo says that her favorite experience in the club so far was when the group attended an event associated with Step Up Women’s Network, a non-profit mentorship organization.
“We just want to prepare every young woman to become confident in going into their career and be ready for workshops or interviews,” Romeo says.
Preparing students for what is next for them outside of college is a strong mission for Women Entering Business.
While there are RSOs that want to prepare students for their career, SXU also has organizations that want to educate students more on a certain interest or topic.
The Political Science Forum strives to achieve that goal by educating students more about current politics.
Their mission is to inform students about their rights and the political sphere occurring internationally, nationally, and locally.
Kareem Asmar—president of the Political Science Forum—says that by being a political science major, it’s his duty to advocate.
Asmar states, “I love politics, politics is in everyday life, wherever you go, wherever you turn, no matter what major you are in. Politics is the center of it all.”
These 3 RSOs were a few out of many other organizations that participated on Aug. 26 on the Schmitt Quad.
Every RSO has a mission and a purpose.
Whether that goal is to prepare students professionally, educate students more, create new friendships, or step outside of their comfort zone, each RSO is individually significant, and the RSO fair was their time to shine.
