A recent Wall Street Journal article discussed how a company named WeWork is skipping their rental payments. WeWork is trying to renegotiate their leases with landlords and stated that they are trying to find solutions to benefit both their landlords and them. Only some landlords have been paid while others are still waiting for payment to come in. The company is struggling due to the loss of revenue resulting from COVID-19. This company is not the only one struggling because of the virus. Several businesses and individuals are going through emotional and financial struggles because of this pandemic.
According to The Guardian, the number of people who have filed for unemployment has risen to 3.3 million since the virus started spreading. Just like WeWork is struggling to make rent payments to their landlords, there are also 3.3 million individuals that are struggling to make do with what they have.
Now more than ever is the time for people to be compassionate and understanding since everyone is going through struggles. So many businesses have been forced to shut down to prevent the spread of the virus, which is why unemployment has risen so much. There will be a lot of people who will be unable to make rent or pay bills in general.
Although the Senate did pass a $2 trillion relief package bill to help citizens, the amount being given will not be enough for everyone. According to ABC News, 90 percent of Americans would be eligible for this relief package. The article states that individuals who make $75,000 or less would be receiving $1,200 or $2400 per married couple. Individuals will also get an additional $500 for each child. The amount of payment each individual receives will decrease according to their income. Small and big businesses will also receive money from this bill.
I am glad our government is trying their best to help citizens during this time, but for some people this relief package will not be enough. There are several bills that need to be paid including rent, utility bills, groceries, medical bills.
The ABC News article also stated that 90 percent of Americans qualify for this package, but there is also 10 percent that do not qualify. People collecting payments for rent among other bills should be understanding about this situation. Not everyone will be able to make these payment deadlines and it will be difficult for people to be able to make payments until this pandemic ends.
I hope the businesses still open are very understanding of people’s situations. This pandemic has caused many deaths and is taking a toll on people’s mental and physical health. I think that businesses should be more concerned with the well being of the people rather than just worrying about collecting payments.
