STEM students and students who take science related classes begun the new semester at SXU with a renovated S-Wing. The renovations started last semester and continued throughout the summer.
As planned, these improvements concluded before the Fall semester begun. These renovations improved the science labs and classes such as lighting, flooring and upgrades in equipment and ventilation.
Students noticed these improvements since the first day of class. In an interview with the Xavierite, Anas Alkouk, senior majoring in Natural Science, shared what he thought about these renovations.
“It was more gloomy last year [laughs] this semester the paint is white and the whole room is brightened. When you are in a dark room you are not really active in lecture but in a room like that you are more active. I think that is a major improvement.”
For Alkouk, these improvements brought more organization and more space for professors and students. “There is more space, for even professors to put their stuff. There is more organization . . . They redid the floors in the microlab, there were so many stains before and now it’s perfectly clean . . . the major differences that I saw was the floor. The actual room was remodeled. They put incubators in the microbiolab and they put a hood in the introductory bio classes.”
A student who preferred to remain anonymous stated that the improvements in the lab were necessary. “The renovations were much needed. The labs before seemed old and outdated.”
These renovations were covered with funds from the third disbursement that SXU received from the ICCAP (Illinois Board of Higher Education Independent Colleges Capital Program) award. SXU used the previous disbursement for renovations in the L-Wing which concluded in 2013.
