On Tuesday November 19, the Saint Xavier University Community mourned the loss of Robert Hallberg, former Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director.  In 1971, Hallberg began his career at Saint Xavier by becoming the head coach of the men’s basketball team. During his six years as head coach,The Cougars amassed a record of 127-61.  In 1977, Hallberg went on to coach at his alma mater, Chicago State University. He remained head coach at Chicago State University until 1987. He would then go on to become the head coach of the UIC Flames from 1987 to 1996.

After a few years out of the coaching world, Hallberg returned to Saint Xavier in 2000 to coach the newly formed women’s basketball team. In his nearly 19 years as head coach he lead the women’s basketball team to a record of 502-131.  After a long career, that also included a tenure as Athletic Director, Hallberg retired at the end of the 2018-19 season. Over his nearly 50 year college coaching career, Hallberg amassed more than 1000 wins. Coach Hallberg will be remembered as one of the greatest college basketball head coaches from the Chicagoland area.

Wake Services will be held on Sunday November 24 from 3pm – 9pm  at Curley Funeral Home, 6116 W. 111 Street in Chicago Ridge. Funeral Services will take place at Our Lady of Loretto, 8925 S. Kostner Ave. in Hometown at 10am on Monday November 25.
