Facility Manager Jennifer Quinlan, and Assistant Facility Manager Kristy Allen from the Athletics department organize the race itself, but there are man more departments, such as Public Safety, Chartwells, Alumni and Parent Relations, Media Services, and WXAV, that make it possible.
The race usually has many participants, having on the first year alone over two hundred., and now having over a thousand participants.
The Cougar 5k has become a lasting tradition and represents the spirit of homecoming.
Participants will feel the energy as they run through the campus, listening to the SXU band, and being cheered on by the SXU Cheerleading and Dance teams, The New Cougar Mascot, and President Wiseman.
As Manager Quinlan said, “The Cougar 5k brings students, faculty, staff, alumni, and neighbors from surrounding communities together for a healthy event that showcases our beautiful and vibrant campus.’
There will be other events throughout the year, but this is the only 5k run that SXU puts together. Some other events include the SXU Health Fair, the Indoor Duathlon, Zumba for Cure, six week 5k training programs, and nutrition counseling programs.
Following the race, participants will be able to enjoy free refreshments such as Propel water, bagels, muffins, fruit, Calabria sandwiches, Jimmy John cookies, and Muscle Milk.
There will also be free flu vaccinations, provided by Health4Chicago, in partnership with the SXU Health Center, and the School of Nursing.
The cost to participate is $25 for SXU students, faculty and staff, and $30 for everyone else. All participants will receive a long sleeve cotton shirt.
The participation fee goes up by $5 on race day, so be sure to register early by going to the Shannon Center, or register online at www.sxu.edu. Keyword: Cougar 5k. Family discounts are also available.
