As the semester is winding down and about to end, it is a time where we can sit back and reflect on what we have learned in our classes. When we go home for semester break, the question we get asked the most is if we learned anything new. More often than not, we have only a few classes that really taught us new concepts to use in our professional life and some classes touched us in ways that will help us in our personal lives.
One class that taught me more about myself and how to take care of my mental and physical well being is Spirituality with Professor Neff. This course is one of the many religion classes students can take. When I chose this course, I did not realize how much it would actually teach me about not only myself but about what it truly means to be a spiritual person.
As a Catholic University, we are required to take a few religion courses. We can choose one of these classes and I will never regret my decision in choosing Spirituality. Over the semester, we read sections from four different books and while it may seem like a large number of books to read, each one taught me something new.
Even as a sophomore, I neglected myself so I could throw myself into the course load I had. This would inevitably cause me to become very stressed and overwhelmed. I still had to learn how to put time aside for myself, while still focusing on my school work.
One writing assignment we had to do was spend an hour unplugged from everything and truly just sit alone with ourselves. During this time, I got to clear my mind and reflect on numerous things going on. I went into a meditation and felt a warm blissfulness I had not felt since before college.
After spending that time alone, I decided to take one day a week to relax and focus on my mental well-being. By doing this, I started to be able to center my attention more on my work because my mind would be clear and untroubled from the stresses of the day.
We also learned how powerful giving back to the community is along with how rewarding it is to be a part of a community. We all need to have a community that we feel we belong to. This is important for us on a spiritual level.
Overall, I feel that Spirituality has helped me not only set more time aside for myself but also reconnected me to my faith. This class is one I will carry with me for the rest of my life. Professor Neff’s lectures left me in awe at how beautiful life is and how we should all be doing our best to give back to those in need. I learned how important it is to love others as well as yourself.
This class truly taught me how to live, love, and learn. I will forever be grateful for everything Professor Neff taught us about what it means to be a spiritual person in this world. Everything I learned I will incorporate into my everyday life and going into finals, I know what I can do to make sure I do my best while not neglecting what is important; how I feel.
