Professional Picture Day on Campus

Professional photos being taken                                                                                                The Xavierite

Women Entering Business (WEB), a club geared toward preparing and supporting women entering the business world,  hosted a Professional Picture day for students to have the opportunity to take free headshots.

Students were able to have their pictures taken from Monday, Nov. 6 until Friday, Nov. 10 in the Warde Academic Center or GSM depending on the day. Photos were taken to help students create a professional business portfolio, LinkedIn account, Handshake, etc.

Most businesses require a LinkedIn account and it is usually the first thing employers will check. LinkedIn is an online professional profile that can be used to strengthen professional relationships, find internships, etc.

WEB hosted this event to combat some common obstacles that prevent women from having professional pictures taken. One concern being the price, with professional photos costing anywhere from $50-300 per shot. A professional camera was used, pictures taken by Evelyn Martinez, WEB President, in front of a white background because most businesses will require this.

“Not everyone has access to pay a photographer $50 to $300 for some professional photos. A lot of people may not even know that you need a professional photo for the business world. Many jobs will require you to have one,” according to Martinez.

Although only around 10 students attended this event, Martinez considered it a success. “As long as at least one person shows up it means a lot to me and means I saved one person some money and the worry of needing professional photos and possibly not knowing where to get one,” added Martinez.

Women Entering Business is a student organization that supports and helps prepare students for their professional lives after college. WEB is open to all students who are currently or were previously enrolled at SXU. The business industry is typically a male dominated field, WEB strives to make sure women feel included and supported while starting their livelihoods.

The members of Women Entering Business demonstrate the value of diversity within business and create bonds with one another that could be beneficial to them in the future.

“I believe WEB is an important club to have because as a woman who’s majoring in finance and accounting, in the classroom women are the minority since the business field is dominated by men. Sometimes you feel left out and it’s not uncommon for women to turn against each other to be the best due to competition. We help build a sense of community with each other where we can grow together and support each other,” says Martinez.

According to LendingTree, Men own 63.2% of businesses, women own 22.2%, and 14.5% are equally owned by male and females.

WEB has also hosted a General Body Meeting Wednesday Nov. 15 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in room S116 to discuss upcoming events and student feedback. All students are invited to attend.

Other events WEB has planned in the past include; a Women’s History Month Empowerment Workshop where students came together to celebrate Women’s History Month, see a self-defense demonstration, and had a chance to win prizes!

Another event WEB had planned was Building Your Own Personal & Professional Brand. Students learned about the importance of building their personal and professional brand.

Although WEB has only recently become an active organization on campus, it has been established for years. Martinez hopes to build on their current momentum and plan many more events that deal with women currently entering the business scene.

If interested, students may join Women Entering Business on the SXU Den. WEB mainly communicates through the Den but also have a GroupMe with everyone in their club in case they want to promote their own clubs, need homework help, etc. Different events planned by WEB are posted on their Instagram page, @sxu_web.
