With concerns and cases for COVID-19 on the rise, collegiate sports fall under uncertainty again. Most recently, the SXU men’s and women’s basketball teams have fallen to the mercy of the virus with changes and postponement of their schedules. Sadly, Cougar nation will not see any more sports for the rest of November, but December and the following months will hopefully be SXU sports games galore.
Luckily, the men’s basketball team was able to play two of their scheduled games before their third game got postponed. The Cougars lost to Cornerstone University 83-91 on November 6th and to Indiana Institute of Technology 77-90 on November 7th, both in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Although the team has yet to win under their belt, success ahead as their season is just beginning.
The team’s next game was scheduled for November 21st at 3 P.M. CT against Indiana University Northwest in Gary, Indiana. Unfortunately, the game will not occur on that date and time, but it will hopefully be rescheduled to a later time this season. The rest of the games on their schedule look to take place at their original dates and times. In addition to making up their postponed game against the Redhawks, the Cougars play Indiana University Northwest scheduled for February 6th at the Shannon Center.
The men’s basketball team’s next scheduled game is not until December 8th, so Cougar fans will have to hold tight for a few weeks to watch the team take the court. The SXU women’s basketball team’s schedule has adjusted quite a bit, too. Originally scheduled to play at the end of October, the women’s team will not play until December 6th against the Illinois State University Redbirds in Normal, Illinois. The game starts at 1 P.M. CT, and it is an exhibition match. Like the men’s schedule, the rest of the women’s scheduled games look to take place at their original dates and times.
As far as what sports to keep an eye out for next, the SXU men’s volleyball team starts their season towards the end of January on the 19th against Judson University in the Shannon Center at 7 P.M. CT. The SXU women’s volleyball team then competes the following week on January 28th against Indiana University Northwest in Gary, Indiana, at 7 P.M. CT. Set schedules are in place for the 2021 season, so hopes are high that it stays that way.
With the postponement of the SXU winter games of men’s and women’s basketball, the SXU community can only keep their fingers crossed that SXU spring sports will still take place when they are currently planned to happen. Without a doubt, something feels like it is missing within the community without more SXU teams playing on their home fields and courts. There is much excitement invested into the spring season, as that is when we will finally get to watch the rest of SXU sports compete.
