Visiting the AMC Ford City 14 The Xavierite
While Saint Xavier’s campus has a lot to offer, boredom permits. If you are looking to explore some places near campus, whether it’s a place to shop or a place for new eats, we have your first year bucket list covered. Here are some of our favorite spots near campus that we recommend exploring while you attend SXU.
Shopping – Second Chance Thrift
One place we highly recommend attending is Second Chance Thrift. Located at 10444 S Kedzie Ave just up the street from campus, Second Chance is perfect for students who are into physical media, or those who’re trying to expand their wardrobe on a budget. They sell thrifted clothes, cookware, and furniture, as well as books, CDs, DVDs, and a variety of other items.
Second Chance has plenty to select from for men and women. When big brands failed to deliver on style or affordability, this store offered a way for me to dress the way I wanted to without hurting my pockets or compromising my wants.
Not only is Second Chance a great place to shop, but it’s somewhere students can go and hang out instead of waiting in their cars between classes.
Entertainment – AMC Ford City 14
Another place you might want to attend is AMC Ford City 14. Located at 7601 S. Cicero Ave, the closest movie theater to campus. As the name suggests, they have fourteen auditoriums, and are always showing a good mix of recent movies and screening of classics. Without many friends at the start of the year, I relied on AMC to entertain me on lonely nights.
Some of my fondest memories from last year were made at this theater, whether it be immersing myself in the racing scenes from “Gran Turismo” or shivering in my seat as I watched “A Haunting in Venice”. The seating is nice, and there’s low traffic throughout the day, providing for a more intimate experience with the movie you choose to see.
While it is smaller than some other AMCs in the area, and they don’t have all the amenities of a high end theater, you can count on there to be low traffic throughout the day, providing for a more intimate experience with the movie you’re going to see.
Food – Huck Finn Restaurant
The third place we recommend trying out for a good dine-in experience is Huck Finn in Oak Lawn. It never fails to disappoint. I can vividly remember it being one of the first places I ever went to as a freshman at Saint Xavier.
Huck Finn is open 24 hours and is less than ten minutes from campus. People recommended it to me early on and I can vividly remember 2 am nights spent there studying and hanging out with new friends.
The community values this establishment as much as students in the area do. The diner not only is open all of the time, but offers affordable prices for students on a budget.
Huck Finn serves breakfast all day alongside some lunch and dinner favorites. My go-to would be the grilled cheese with swiss and bacon added. I remember my friends being fond of their soup specials as well, which change based on the day.
You can visit Huck Finn at 10501 S Cicero Ave in Oak Lawn.
Coffee – Two Mile Coffee Bar
As far as coffee goes, Two Mile Coffee Bar is a coffee shop near campus that has a lot to offer. They recently expanded their space to allow more room for people who want a place to hang out or study. Their coffee menu and food menu offer an unbeatable combination students should explore if they want to venture off campus with an atmosphere fit for productivity.
I have been to several coffee shops, many being near campus, and no place beats Two Mile. My go-to is an iced vanilla latte. They also offer four new drinks for every season that are exciting to explore.
You can find Two Mile at 9907 S Walden Parkway in Chicago. They have limited street parking.
