The 2024 Presidential Election cycle is over and we, The Xavierite Editorial Board, are beyond disappointed in the results. We were hoping that the sense of stress and anxiety we felt during the election cycle would go away. Sadly, those feelings have just increased.
“I found myself not being able to focus on what was on the TV due to the stress I was feeling as Trump grew closer to winning the election,” one editorial board member recounted their mental state on election night.
Another member shared, “I was tossing and turning the night of the election knowing that Harris has no chance to make a comeback.”
We are very concerned what a second Trump presidency will mean for us. From his stance on undocumented individuals to his views on climate change, foreign policy, abortion, and project 2025, we fear for the state of our republic and democracy in America as a whole. Will we lose hard fought rights? Will he focus more on taking revenge on his political rivals, instead of fixing the real problems our country is facing? Only time will tell.
One board member notes that many Americans may have nothing to worry about. “Already governors in California, Illinois, and other states that have elected Democrats as their leaders have sworn to protect their citizens against any attempt to revoke their rights,” the board member stated.
The board member further noted that while many a politician’s words have proven untrustworthy, many Democrat leaders across the country are prepared to fight this fight since we have already seen a Trump presidency and know what lies ahead.
What probably concerns us the most is the fact that America is still more divided than ever. We don’t see any semblance of unity in the near future.
“I am already seeing a more hate-filled country,” one board member asserts. The question is, how do we fix that? Can it be fixed during the next four years? We’re not so sure.
If this nation is going to be fixed, it’s going to have to start small, at the community level. How can we at SXU help? These are the conversations that we need to begin having. It’ll be hard and challenging, but necessary if we want to help bridge this divide we are experiencing.
One board member believes that Harris would have been a better candidate to bridge the monumental gap between Americans today.
“I think she would have done a lot of good for this nation and helped unify the country in certain social aspects,” the member stated.
“It makes me very sad to know that the majority of America believes a convicted felon and narcissist should be running the country,” one member mournfully argued.
Overall, the editorial board shares the discouragement many Americans are feeling right now, but we hope that this second Trump presidency will pleasantly surprise us and the worries we as Americans are sharing will not come to fruition.
