Saint Xavier University offers their students help with their work through the Learning Center/Writing Studio.
The Learning Center/Writing Studio is open Monday through Thursday, 8am-8pm, and Friday, 8am-5pm, in room L110 in the Warde Academic Center.
There are tutors available for a variety of courses. Also available at the Learning Center/Writing Studio are Writing Consultants on call to help students with any academic paper. Tutor and Writing Consultant appointments can be scheduled here.
Writing Consultants are available for walk ins, but walk-in appointments are not guaranteed, so making a appointment ahead of time is recommended.
Joanna Nemeh, the Director of the Learning Center/Writing Studio, recommends that students take advantage of the center because, “Students shouldn’t assume they will excel in every class they take.
That’s an awful lot of pressure to put on yourself. I could be a whiz at math, but lack practice in critical thinking to do well in philosophy. I may have a knack for memorization, but lack the skills to apply it.
Not to mention that there is often a good deal of anxiety that surrounds paper writing.
Why not ask for help? Writing consultants are here to inspire, structure, and revise papers in all courses. The center is here to support every part of your academic life.”
Through the Learning Center/Writing Studio, students are able to get help and feedback on their papers.
Dr. Nemeh says it is important for students to to get help on assignments and to have their papers looked over, because as she says,“Fresh eyes are especially useful in the world of writing. What seems like a wonderful, thoughtful paragraph to the writer, could be confusing to others. Having a consultant go over your paper’s structure and make sure the thesis statement is intact to support your developing ideas is incredibly important.”
Taking advantage of the resources provided by the school helps students get help on assignments when they need it, and actually learn how to do the work through the help that is being given.
“It can be overwhelming entering a classroom or program where you have academic gaps. Perhaps you are a Biology major, but have trouble in Chemistry. It may get frustrating because you feel that you should excel in both. Our tutors help to reconcile the unique skill set each subject requires, and assist in developing those skills,” says Dr. Nemeh.
The tutors at the Learning Center/Writing Studio are also students at SXU, and are there to help their peers academic development when needed.
“They provide and develop learning strategies, and apply those techniques in a collaborative, group environment. As an HSI, (Hispanic Serving Institution) it is our mission to support the historically underserved, the first-generation and multilingual students. We also strengthen the writing and critical thinking skills of those returning to college,” said Dr. Nemeh.
Joanna Nemeh, the advisory of the Learning Center/Writing Studio, is a former faculty member in the Philosophy, Religious Studies and Theology Department. She, along with the other dedicated faculty and staff, have spent years identifying and responding to the strengths and needs of the University’s evolving and growing community.
Dr. Nemeh’s main areas of interest is feminist philosophy and theology and issues of social justice.
Her door is always open to all students, no matter the concern. She also recently won the Teaching Excellence Award in 2018.
The Learning Center/Writing Studio is a great resource for the students of SXU to take advantage of, due to its numerous academic benefits.
Students are always encouraged to get help when needed, and also have a paper looked over to improve their writing skills.
