As the school year commences, Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) undertake their preparations for the beginning of the year activities. After the RSO reregistration process commenced on Wednesday, Aug.28, clubs and organizations offered for the 2024–25 school years became officially live on The Den.

The RSO Fair took place in the Schmitt Quad. Each RSO who registered to The Den, was able to host a table with information pertaining to their organization and the events they organize.

RSOs like Drama Club, The Student Government Association (SGA), Political Science Forum, and WXAV Student Radio Station were featured at the event. Many of these tables contained free snacks and treats, as well as merch and flyers in accordance with their organization. “We wanted to make sure that the RSOs felt included and can promote themselves from the start of the school year” remarks Orientation & Belonging Coordinator Giuli Islas.

Students were found near the empanada truck located near the quad., Free empanadas were available to those who scanned their Den Pass.

Events have begun popping up both on the Posting Zones found in the hallways of Warde, as well as The Den page itself. Some University sports teams have begun hosting games here in the Shannon Center.

Drama club recently held auditions for their Halloween-inspired production on Thursday, Sept.12 in McGuire Hall. Callbacks were held in McGuire the following day, where certain students were asked to come back and audition a second time for the various roles.

Vice President of Drama Club, John Street says, “the play is about vampires and magic and monster hunters, it’s really fun. The production will be held on November 1st at 5 p.m. in McGuire Hall.”  Street encourages students to come and watch.

The Political Science Forum has planned some events for the semester as well. Their events have been targeted towards the residence halls for resident and commuter students alike. On Tuesday, Sept.10, The Political Science Forum held a watch party for the Presidential Debate.

This event was located in Pacelli lounge. Students were invited to eat a variety of snacks while watching the debate. Though free food wasn’t advertised, there was food provided for students in the lounge.

After watching the debate, students were asked a series of questions that correlated to it.

President of the Political Science Forum, Morgan Ulanowski, oversaw the event. “We wanted to let students talk to each other about what their thoughts and opinions about the debate were. Friendly and insightful conversation ensued during this event. It was very nice listening to everyone discuss their thoughts about the debate,” remarks Ulanowski.

“Politics are everywhere around us, and it is very important to try and make change for something you believe in,” explains Ulanowski.

Both on campus and commuter students are invited to come to their events and discuss political science. Students who are interested are asked to attend their events or join.

Another student hosting interactive events on campus is Arlene Silva, a Resident Director of Rubloff & Pacelli Halls (RuPa). On Monday, Sept. 9, Silva hosted an event on the first floor of Rubloff lounge titled, “Do You Need to Munch?”.

This event was geared towards residents, however, all students were welcome. The event featured free Dunkin munchkins and donuts. When asked about the event, Silva expressed wanting residents to talk to each other while listening to music and eating donuts.

“As a Resident Assistant (RA) I often try to hold funnier or eye-catching events because I want residents to feel like I am just another student they can be comfortable around and talk to. Students coming together once in a while can create so many good memories,” states Arlene.

Many RSOs and clubs are beginning to have their first meetings in the next coming weeks, so it isn’t too late to be part of one of the many organizations SXU has.

Notably, organizations like Unidos, SJP (Students for Justice In Palestine), MSA (Muslim Student Association), and NSSLHA (National Student Speech Language & Hearing Association) have posted their commencement events on The Den. Events can be found @theden.sxu.edu/events

Recreational sports clubs like SXU Couch Gamers have posted their introductory events for students to come and enjoy online games. In addition to events held by RSOs, official games hosted by SXU can be found on the calendar page of the official website @sxucougars.com.

SXU has many upcoming events and games for students to participate in. For more questions pertaining to clubs and events, check out @theden.sxu.edu.
