Olivia Rodrigo surprised her fans with the sudden release of her music video “traitor” the second song off her debut album “SOUR” this past Friday Oct 22.
“traitor” is about a teen’s first major heartbreak, and of course betrayal.
There has been speculation that “traitor” is dedicated to Rodrigo’s co-star/ex-boyfriend Joshua Bassett. We know where this is headed.
Rodrigo went on Instagram and broke the news with this post.

As a huge fan of hers, I immediately watched the video and I was not disappointed.
“traitor” starts off with Rodrigo’s angelic harmonizations as she is jumping in a white dress infront of a pinkish violet sky complimented by rays of sunlight.
She has pink ombré hair and is rocking the glittery eyeshadow, indicating she is a youthful teenager in her prime. While she rocks the cool hair and bold makeup on the outside, she is broken on the inside.
She seeks to conceal her heartache by hanging out with friends in a high school football field, taking dips in a swimming pool, taking long drives around town and playing in an arcade.
This is the epitome of teenagers having fun, but amidst all of the fun around her she is completely distraught and lost in her hurt. Rodrigo has been forced to mentally grow up with this heartache, but she is attempting to come back home to her eighteen year old teenage heart.
As a viewer it gives you a genuine feeling of sorrow and pain watching her process her heartache while attempting to engage in fun filled activities. This was when pure authenticity swept in. Rodrigo wasn’t afraid to express the raw and intense hurt a heartbreak can cause someone.
You disconnect from those around you, and you attempt to pick yourself back up. Rodrigo embodied this energy throughout the entire video.
No matter what age you are, a heartache is a heartache. The younger generations have to fight for emotional validation nowadays and Rodrigo is breaking that stigma with her unapologetic teenage energy.
Rodrigo has been skyrocketing in the pop industry ever since her hit single “driver’s license” touched the souls of broken hearts earlier this year. From the looks of it she is definitely here to stay.
Olivia Rodrigo is a cool and distinct teenager, and I am here for it.
