No Starbucks on Saturday

No one can deny that college students rely on caffeine daily. Whether it is coffee, energy drinks, or tea, we all use it to get through a tough exam or long study session. The campus branch of Starbucks, located in Morris Hall serves as the primary source of caffeine for the student body.

While Starbucks is open throughout the week, the coffee house is closed all day on Saturdays. Starbucks being closed on Saturdays is becoming a problem for students and the business itself.

During the three years that I’ve lived on campus, it’s frustrated me that Starbucks closes its doors on Saturday. When students who live on campus are studying most of the weekend, it becomes upsetting when Starbucks isn’t offered to the students.

When asked about Starbucks business hours, Starbucks worker, Anita-Raphael McElroy, said, “I have heard that Starbucks is having issues with money coming in. I don’t understand why we aren’t open on Saturdays if it would mean more business.”

McElroy also shared, “I see groups of students come into Starbucks for a chance to do assignments with their friends. I guarantee that students would continue to do that on Saturdays if we were open.”

Starbucks is a place where students go to freely do assignments while enjoying a tasty beverage and sandwich with peers.

Starbucks worker, Andres Salgado stated, “A lot of students come to Starbucks and order three sandwiches at once for a study session because they are planning on being at Starbucks for a big chunk of time.”

When I asked Yuna Mathieu, a student, about her studying habits at Starbucks she said, “I feel like it’s a perfect place to study especially if you are a commuter.”

Commuters and residents find that Starbucks is a relaxing and enjoyable place to be when studying. Unlike The Diner and Coffee Cats, it gives students a close walk that is open to the public. Students from Mother Mcauley and families walking their dogs can be served at Starbucks.

Other options that Saint Xavier University offers for students to study and spend time with friends like The Diner is often noisy and crowded with other students eating their meals and events daily.

When I asked a Starbucks worker about how Starbucks changing their hours would help students, Yasmine Lopez shared, “It would help the residents of the dorm halls to have something to look forward to on the weekends when they are busy getting ready for the next week of school.”

Ava Rivera, student, stated, “ I think that residential students would benefit academically from Starbucks being open on Saturdays because it would motivate the students into continuing to do their work.”

Every college student finds themselves tired when schoolwork and exams start to pile up. Coffee isn’t the only thing that students love to have on campus. However, it is one of the best motivators on campus for students to look forward to.

Rivera also said, “When I am having a hard day, I try to reward myself with a drink and my favorite pastry from Starbucks to keep me going until the end of the day.”

Saint Xavier University needs to take into account that students are active on campus over the weekend. They need to acknowledge that Starbucks is a need when we are doing multiple assignments and studying for exams.

We all as students are fortunate to have a Starbucks on campus. However, we just need to have Saturdays to help the student body with their academic motivation.
