The new Spiral trailer released on March 30, 2021. Fans are anticipating the film’s release on May 14, 2021.
We already see that while this keeps the feel of a Saw-esque film, it will definitely be unique. The previous trailer was more of a visual teaser. In the new trailer, we hear more dialogue from several characters, and it gives us a glimpse into what to expect to a certain extent:
It presents a Jigsaw-style killer who is targeting cops. Samuel L. Jackson plays an ex-chief cop who is the father of the main character, detective Zeke Banks, played by Chris Rock.
The police precinct is taunted by a new Jigsaw killer (copycat, apprentice, or follower?) which leads detective Banks to bring his father into the equation.
One of the other aspects that stands out, and is different from the other films, is that the distorted voice to conceal the Jigsaw killer’s identity is different.
The franchise has always had a way of spotlighting cops in every film. It’s no surprise that this film is centering cops in the signature sadistic Jigsaw game.
There has never been a better time for the Saw franchise to target cops, as in our society today, the time of accountability for police brutality has arise. It’s not certain, though, as to why cops are being targeted in Spiral, and theories are projecting from fans.
The possibilities are countless. There’s detective Mark Hoffman (detective lieutenant who extracted vengeance on the man who murdered his sister, then he was left chained in the bathroom trap to die in Saw VII (2010)).
If Mark Hoffman were coming back, one of his mistakes is when the FBI found out his identity by unraveling his distorted voice from one of the tapes in a case. I could see the new distorted voice, perhaps being harder to unravel, being him learning from said mistake.
One of the most loathed characters, Logan Nelson (medical examiner who extracted vengeance on a corrupt cop in Jigsaw (2017)), is another possibility, but is less likely and I personally don’t want to see him again. The Jigsaw film created plot holes that didn’t exist before, but I hope Spiral somehow overlooks or resolves them.
Some fans are hoping that we don’t get another new apprentice reveal, just like Logan Nelson, because the apprentice reveal gig only goes so far. However, imagine if there was a Jigsaw following. It would be gnarly if Jigsaw had an outside cult following introduced.
Eleanor Bonneville (assistant of Logan Nelson) had a fascination with Jigsaw. She owned a warehouse with many of his traps, and frequently visited the dark web to a Jigsaw website. While Eleanor was a flimsy character (again, everything about the Jigsaw film was not great), the introduction of her can be expanded on by introducing other people like her.
Director Kevin Greutert (editor of Saw I–Saw V, director of Saw VI and Saw VII) confirmed for me in an email that Jigsaw’s mantra got messed up because of the different ideas that directors, screenwriters, and producers had. Jigsaw goes from psychopath murderer justifying his actions through righteous rambling, to cult-like leader with followers (his apprentices) who are willing to kill for him.
