It’s that time of year again where you grab the nearest blanket and turn on Netflix to find a new scary movie. So here are two movies to avoid and two to watch to ensure your fall is as spooky as possible.
No Escape Room (2018)
Starting off, the first movie to avoid this fall would be, “No Escape Room.” A father and daughter are in a small town when they stumble across an escape room they decide to try, in order to pass the time. They end up getting stuck inside with no way out. The idea of the movie was interesting and the atmosphere was pretty on point with what would be expected. The beginning was promising as the story was building and viewers were able to get an idea of what the duo had actually gotten themselves into. Escape rooms have been popular in recent years, so the idea behind the movie seemed promising.
What ultimately did this film in, was the second half. It became more confusing as the story progressed, and the ending was not received well by many viewers. The ending was baffling as it had a lot of people wondering what the point was. There is no clear ending, yet it is not a film that deserves a sequel. If you are looking for an escape room horror film, there are definitely better ones out there.
The Open House (2018)
Another movie to avoid would be, “The Open House.” In this film, a mother and son spend some time in a relative’s vacant vacation home, in order to get away from a recent tragedy. Although while they are there, they are met with unexplainable forces. While it started off promising, the movie’s plot quickly fell as there is a lack of interesting characters in the movie. The characters who are on screen do not manage to maintain audience interest. Aside from this, what happens in the house has the potential to build up into something that would scare viewers, but we are instead met with a weak ending leaving everyone upset.
There are some gory parts to the film that make the ending seem like it could have gone somewhere, but it is the end of the film that manages to land itself on the list of what to avoid.
Now, let’s explore Netflix movies to give a try!
Countdown (2019)
“Countdown” covers the story of a nurse who finds an app telling her the exact time in which she will die. The app ends up being accurate, as seen with other people throughout the movie. She spends the film trying to figure out how to change her approaching fate. For any “Final Destination” lovers out there, this movie is similar with the strange deaths and has an added modern twist with the app to download. The movie maintains its plot throughout and ends well.
Even with some cheesy graphics, this is a good film to check out for anyone with a Netflix subscription this fall. There is also a real app called “Countdown” that viewers can download if they dare to after watching.
The Conjuring 2 (2016)
Taking place in London, this movie in “The Conjuring” series is about a girl who releases a malevolent spirit into her house. The Warrens are back once again to help get rid of the spirit. For any ghost story lovers, “The Conjuring” series is a classic that cannot be looked past with the amazing production and flow of each story. These movies are done well with believable effects that add to the paranormal storytelling experience. This makes the fact that these were based on true stories more frightening. Anyone seeking a more classic horror movie to watch for free, if you already have a Netflix subscription, should not count out this film.
What is great about this series is that the movies do not need to be watched in order; they will still make sense even if this is your first time. Checking out “The Conjuring 2” will not leave anyone confused or disappointed.
That wraps up this mini Netflix guide for the upcoming month of October. Hopefully you get to find a new scary movie to watch that leaves you horrified in the best way!
