The National Society of Collegiate Scholars is currently an organization on the campus of Saint Xavier University that is being reintroduced after being inactive for the past two years.
The NSCS is being brought back by two students on campus who are hoping the group takes off and draws interest from the student body. Brendan Burke is the president of the organization and Stephanie Naegele is the Vice President of the Saint Xavier chapter of the NSCS.
When describing the organization, Naegele stated, “The National Society of Collegiate Scholars is not your average honors organization. We recognize academic achievement and provide opportunities for members to develop leadership skills. Members positively change their campuses and communities by participating in service activities as they prepare for future endeavors like internships, graduate school, and careers. Along the way, members often make valuable connections with fellow high-achieving students..”
The goal is to help students achieve greater things during their college experience and seek out meaningful opportunities on campus, according to Naegele.
The organization itself also holds certain requirements for students in order to qualify for admission into the NSCS. Essentially students are required to have a 3.4 grade point average which puts them in the top 20 percent of students on a national scale.
Students seeking to joint the NSCS must also be either a first year or second year student.
Students are only given admission if their respective university or college has an active chapter of the NSCS, and in the case of Saint Xavier University there is an active chapter now.
The benefits of joining the NSCS are numerous according to Naegele, and these benefits are aimed at providing students better opportunities to grow as students and adults.
Some of the benefits of joining the NSCS include opportunities to gain recognition for their academic work and resources that can be used to guide them through their college career.
Members are also given unique opportunities to pursue special scholarships and awards that can help NSCS members fund their education at the collegiate level. Naegele believes these financial benefits are a huge draw for students, and can provide real tangible benefits to members of the NSCS.
The NSCS also hosts many events throughout the country which will allow students to travel the country and access networks of employers and recruiters.
These networking opportunities are believed by Naegele to be effective means for members of the NSCS to find internships and employment after school. Naegele explained how it is a concern of many students she knows; employment after getting their degree is a grave concern of theirs.
One of the last financial benefits that students in the NSCS have is that they receive discounts on many things they need most in college such as textbooks and vehicle insurance. These financial benefits can allow for NSCS members to reduce the costs of attending college greatly.
The National Society of Collegiate Scholars is being relaunched currently and it is critical at this point for students to show interest in the organization according to Naegele. Naegele hopes student participation this time around will bring more steady interest in the club.
Naegele hopes to get the organization more visibility on campus in order to avoid the Saint Xavier chapter from shutting down again.
