My Highlights and Initial Thoughts of The Grammy Nominations List

On Friday, Nov. 8, the nominations for the 2025 Grammy Awards were announced.

I am especially excited for the Grammys next year, since I feel that 2024 was an exceptionally outstanding year for pop music, my go-to genre, in general.

Addison Rae’s First Grammy Nomination

Up and coming pop sensation Addison Rae is up for a shot at winning her first ever Grammy award under the category Best Remixed Recording for her collaboration with Charli xcx on “The Von Dutch Remix.”

The Louisiana native has been serving fans hit after hit; from the sultry “Diet Pepsi” that signified a slight rebrand to the ethereal, house-y “Aquamarine,” I can’t help but wonder if an album is in the works for the starlet.

Madison Beer Receives Sophomore Grammy Nomination

It was revealed with the release of the nominations list that Madison Beer’s show stopping hit “Make You Mine” would be one of the contenders for Best Dance Pop Recording.

It is Beer’s second Grammy nomination, her first being at last year’s ceremony under Best Immersive Album for “Silence Between Songs.”

Ariana Grande’s Biggest Hit Gets The Smallest Amount of Recognition

What I was most shocked of all to see was the fact that Ariana Grande’s hit “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait For Your Love)” was not nominated for any categories this year.

The less favored single among fans from Grande’s “Eternal Sunshine,” “Yes, And?,” received a nomination for Best Dance Pop Recording.

“We Can’t Be Friends” is the second single off “Eternal Sunshine,” Grande’s seventh studio album released on Mar. 8 of this year. It is the track that made her the female artist with the most number one debuts in history, and although “Yes, And?” was a number one debut, it did not sit well with fans in the long run, and I would consider it to be a forgotten Grande single in my book.

Grande was also nominated under two other categories: Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for the “The Boy is Mine” remix with Brandy and Monica, and Best Pop Vocal Album for “Eternal Sunshine.”

I feel with unwavering certainty that “We Can’t Be Friends” was completely snubbed at this year’s Grammy Awards, and I must say I anticipated many more nominations headed Grande’s way, particularly in the main categories, such as Album, Song, or Artist of the Year.

Taylor Swift is Nominated for Six Grammy Awards

Least shocking of all, Taylor Swift, is nominated in six categories this year: Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album for “The Tortured Poets Department,” Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Music Video for “Fortnight,” and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Us.” by Gracie Abrams, which features Swift.

I know many will, but I’m not going to hate on Swift because she is nominated for more awards than most other artists for the third year in a row now. I see why people think it’s unfair, and to a degree, maybe it is, but I believe there is something to be said about them and how they are a testament to her striking ability to create and market her music.

Sabrina Carpenter’s Nomination Under Best New Artist

I think it’s interesting that Sabrina Carpenter is nominated for Best New Artist, even though she has been a mainstream artist long before the immense success of “Espresso” this year.

While I concede that “Espresso” undoubtedly skyrocketed Carpenter’s career and prominence, Carpenter has been well known in the public eye for years, and I just find it noteworthy that rapper Ice Spice, though only rising to prominence the year prior, was nominated for Best New Artist in 2023, while Carpenter had even had mainstream singles by that point and had long since risen to prominence on Disney Channel.

I also think it’s unfair that Sabrina Carpenter gets placed in the same category as artists such as Doechii, Khruangbin, and RAYE, who are much less prominent in the public eye.

With this, I feel the need to clarify that I do believe Carpenter to be an immensely talented artist who deserves her nominations in categories such as Record of the Year and Album of the Year without a doubt.

Though I am disappointed at the lack of accolades for “We Can’t Be Friends,” I am anxiously awaiting next year’s Grammy Award ceremony, and cannot wait to see some of my favorite artists possibly take home some awards.
